Cubans create temporary classrooms to guarantee the school year
The initiative, which has been operating since Monday at the University of Computer Science, allows children and adolescents residing in the university community to maintain their school year without interruptions

As an exceptional and quick solution to the challenges imposed by the current contingency of fuel shortages facing the country, the University of Computer Sciences (UCI) implements an innovative educational project: the creation of temporary classrooms for children and adolescents from preschool to ninth grade residing in the university community, thus guaranteeing the continuity of its teaching process.
The measure, arising from the impossibility of maintaining daily transport to the different schools in which the minors are enrolled, and coordinated with the Ministry of Education (Mined) and the Municipal Directorate of Education in La Lisa, becomes an unprecedented experience in the sector, reported to Granma Naima Trujillo Barreto, head of the Mined.
He explained that the tuition is 95 students, and the teachers who teach the classes are professional graduates in teaching, “many are teachers who reside in the ICU and parents”, who received adequate methodological preparation at the school level.
For his part, Raydel Montesino Perurena, rector of the UCI, explained that, despite the exceptionality, the classrooms work with the discipline and rigor of any educational center.
He said that the start of the activities has been dedicated to organizational adjustments and knowledge consolidation. In addition, parental involvement has been key in solving logistical and infrastructure problems, in an environment of collective collaboration, he added.
In tour of the academic institution, Eduardo Martínez Díaz, deputy prime minister, found that this experience, “born of ingenuity and collective dedication in the midst of the complex circumstances that the nation lives”, does not stop the substantive functions of the ICU.
While the youngest are being served, the university reorganizes its higher education process, adapted to a regime of semi-face-to-face and distance education for its undergraduate students, from all the provinces of the country, for the second period of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Today, the "Pioneers.uci.cu" project received a visit from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cuba. The children participated in a morning assembly at the Plaza Martiana of the University of Computer Sciences (UCI), attended by Dr. Naima Ariatne Trujillo Barreto, Minister of Education, along with local education officials, members of the University Council, and parents.

This innovative, temporary initiative arose as an alternative to ensure the continuity of education for UCI students in primary and secondary school, given the complex situation our country faces with fuel shortages resulting from the tightening of the blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States government.

Como una solución excepcional y rápida ante los retos impuestos por la actual contingencia de desabastecimiento de combustible que enfrenta el país, la Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas (UCI) implementa un innovador proyecto educativo: la creación de aulas temporales para los niños y adolescentes desde preescolar hasta noveno grado que residen en la comunidad universitaria, garantizando así la continuidad de su proceso docente.
La medida, surgida ante la imposibilidad de mantener el transporte diario hacia las diferentes escuelas en las que están matriculados los menores, y coordinada con el Ministerio de Educación (Mined) y la Dirección Municipal de Educación en La Lisa, se convierte en una experiencia inédita en el sector, informó a Granma Naima Trujillo Barreto, titular del Mined.
Explicó que la matrícula es de 95 estudiantes, y los profesores que imparten las clases son profesionales graduados en enseñanza, «muchos son maestros que residen en la UCI y padres», quienes recibieron preparación metodológica adecuada al nivel escolar.
Por su parte, Raydel Montesino Perurena, rector de la UCI, detalló que, a pesar de la excepcionalidad, las aulas funcionan con la disciplina y el rigor de cualquier centro educativo.
Dijo que el inicio de las actividades ha estado dedicado a los ajustes organizativos y consolidación de conocimientos. Además, la participación de los padres ha sido clave en la solución de problemas logísticos y de infraestructura, en un ambiente de colaboración colectiva, agregó.
En recorrido por la institución académica, Eduardo Martínez Díaz, vice primer ministro, constató que esta experiencia, «nacida del ingenio y la dedicación colectiva en medio de las complejas circunstancias que vive la nación», no detiene las funciones sustantivas de la uci.
Mientras se atiende a los más jóvenes, la universidad reorganiza su proceso de formación superior, adaptado a un régimen de semipresencialidad y educación a distancia para sus estudiantes de pregrado, provenientes de todas las provincias del país, de cara al segundo periodo del curso 2025-2026.
