The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation released a new report titled “Black on the Timeline: Social Media, Misinformation, and the Mental Health of Black Emerging Adults,” which offers a timely look at how digital platforms support and undermine the well-being of young Black users. The report examines the impacts of online racism, misinformation, and community-building, highlighting how social media can simultaneously serve as a space for identity, connection, and resilience — while also exposing Black emerging adults to psychological stressors that shape their mental health in profound ways.

The report’s themes also echo the Joint Center’s Section 230 Brief Series, which explores how platform liability rules intersect with the Black digital experience. Our research shows how misinformation, targeted suppression, and uneven moderation practices continue to reproduce longstanding inequities online. Together, these insights emphasize the urgent need for a digital ecosystem that safeguards, rather than destabilizes, the well-being and autonomy of Black users.  ///
