An audio file from Barb (sent by Shere-Ling to some of us, those
who were there Sunday night: Shere-Ling, Catherine, Carol, and me) is
interesting.
Then I checked Barb's website and found a link to this
pronunciation page:
http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/Pronounce.aspx?
search=l

also, http://international.ouc.bc.ca/pronunciation/ is the link
Carol gave us Sunday night; it is also good (in different ways) and
it links to other websites.

I think PRONUNCIATION (like these, and I think in the kinds of
"materials" the 3 of you were looking at, to maybe buy) plus
PRINCIPLES (like those I emailed to you early in the week) could be
the foundation for a modular class.

It's interesting that Willow Creek eventually gave up on their
ESL Classes, because they decided that other ESL Classes (given in
schools, etc) could do it better, and Willow Creek shouldn't try to
duplicate these other services that were already available.
But one factor might be the people situation; I don't know if WC
is in a high-density area for visiting students & scholars, like we
have at UW, so maybe the potential "demand for this service" wasn't
as high as it might be for us, near UW.
Most of the ideas we're trying to think about, for a class, have
been done already (by ESL experts) so we're re-inventing the wheel,
sort of. Eventually I hope we'll find someone who is expert and
experienced in ESL, and maybe they can help us to structure a modular
class.

If any of you who were not there Sunday night (but want to be
involved in thinking about a modular ESL Class, maybe 3-4 weeks),
we'd like to hear from you.

Willow Creek is out in total suburbia. I don't see it having alot of Internationals to serve per square mile of people. I see us as being servants to aid in the fluency of English for the comfort of the Those that want more fluency.
Are those that have come aware of Barb's website?

When my husband and I served at Willow, we drove students (studying fast track MBA) from UIC near downtown Chicago to Willow at South Barrington. A lot of internationals had came and are going to Willow because of the great seeker-centered  service, excellent reputation, and its outstanding international outreach effort just like BH Church is. I will email you a clip of Christmas service of last year for you to get a taste of what I am saying here later.

Like I said all of the guests attended Barb's session in 1/4/2009 and has her website didn't show up at last week's ESL Cafe. Only one PostDoc still comes to ESL Cafe from time to time and two are in the "English Conversation Partners" program.

What I am doing in BH in term of ESL programs is mostly becuse I am a "product" of Willow from fall of 1999 to the end of 2001.

Blessings,
Shere-Ling

I ordered a copy of Something to Talk About from the Uof Mich Press. Met with Caryn and saw the book in person and I think it is good. The teachers' guide for Word by Word is great and with the students' book could open up conversations about lots of topics. The more the EsL Cafe attendees talk, the better their pronounciations will get just because they are talking English.
Love to see your video Shereling. I'm sorry I missed Barb's presentation as I think it is putting holes in my understanding of all you've been through.
Love and prayers, Carol

Actually, I don't think it is a matter of having an expert.
I think it is a matter of having too many people with no clear common idea of what this should be.
If there is one leader, taking the input of the class from last Sunday, with strong communication skills, and follow-through, who would just select a method that has already been developed - THAT would work.  What does not work is 3 people with 3 different ideas of how to do this viaing for convincing the other two of what to do.  I agree that there should be no reinvention of the wheel.  That's my opinion.
