Hello great people,

I trust everyone is doing fine, so sorry this is coming late, but we are having our meeting this Saturday 21st September.

Our agenda is.

1. Built for BlackBerry competition? ( there is a $10,000 prize money for the winner, I strongly believe that apps like Jandus Radio, Jobs in Nigeria, Figgy cinema and A-Yoruba stand a chance)
2. Ad wrapper webinar by Vserse (I believe this would be good for those currently using ads to monetize their apps)
3. App show cases
3. Networking.
4. Any other issues.

Please let me know if you want to add anything to the agenda or showcase your app.

Regards,
Zubair

Sorry about the mix up, I replied immediately with the correct date.

Hey guys, see below our Q&A session with Michael on the Built for BlackBerry competition for Africa.

[5:03:19 PM] Zubair Abubakar: so first question
[5:03:29 PM] Michael Weitzel: Grand total prize of $10,000!!
[5:03:42 PM] Michael Weitzel: ...for the winner…
[5:04:00 PM] Zubair Abubakar: How many countries are involved?
[5:04:01 PM] Michael Weitzel: Built for BlackBerry designation by the End of October!
[5:04:21 PM] Michael Weitzel: App needs to be in the store before requesting Built for BlackBerry testing.
[5:04:35 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:05:14 PM] Michael Weitzel: The program was relaunched a couple of weeks ago. Now no subjective criteria anymore!
[5:05:35 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:05:52 PM] Zubair Abubakar: [5:04 PM] Zubair Abubakar:

<<< How many countries are involved?
[5:06:10 PM] Michael Weitzel: Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa.
[5:06:25 PM] Michael Weitzel: I think the audio call dropped.
[5:06:46 PM] Michael Weitzel: Ah, your back.
[5:06:53 PM] Michael Weitzel: your = you're
[5:07:37 PM] Zubair Abubakar: you mentioned middle east, what abt middle east ?
[5:08:16 PM] Michael Weitzel: Depends on when the BB Jam is there, no firm date yet.
[5:09:10 PM] Michael Weitzel: Don't forget, app need BBWorld approval and then can only apply for BfB designation.
[5:09:10 PM] *** Call ended, duration 12:41 ***
[5:09:38 PM] Michael Weitzel: Call keeps dropping. ;(
[5:09:59 PM] Zubair Abubakar: how do you ensure that other countries are not part of the competition?
[5:10:10 PM] Zubair Abubakar: lol, sorry about that
[5:10:22 PM] Michael Weitzel: How many apps do you reckon will apply from Nigeria?
[5:10:54 PM] Zubair Abubakar: about 5 from the group
[5:11:01 PM] Michael Weitzel: We know the attendants of the BB Jam. It's managed by Lany, Luca and myself (=i.e. personal relationship, that's how we make sure!)
[5:11:04 PM] Zubair Abubakar: hopefully more
[5:11:28 PM] Michael Weitzel: Awesome, encourage the first time attendees that were at the Jam!
[5:12:04 PM] Zubair Abubakar: So besides Built for BlackBerry criteria, what other ones determine the winner?
[5:12:29 PM] Michael Weitzel: That's up to Lany and the judges.
[5:12:50 PM] Michael Weitzel: They will select the winner from the BfB pool.
[5:13:04 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:13:52 PM] Michael Weitzel: We should do a tweet-up next… (facepalm)
[5:13:58 PM] Zubair Abubakar: what is the limit for denying apps under built for BlackBerry
[5:14:06 PM] Zubair Abubakar: ok cool
[5:14:54 PM] Michael Weitzel: denying? there is an appeals process if the app gets rejected. You can re-apply for the same app twice. So that makes three shots at BfB in total.
[5:15:26 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay cool
[5:16:52 PM] Michael Weitzel: Native, Casacdes, WebWorks and Air apps can apply.
[5:17:16 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:17:46 PM] Michael Weitzel: Check-out the criteria for BfB: http://developer.blackberry.com/builtforblackberry/documentation/criteria.html
[5:19:21 PM] Michael Weitzel: There is a separate LE offer for BfB: http://developer.blackberry.com/builtforblackberry/documentation/lebfbincentive.html
[5:19:44 PM] Zubair Abubakar: there is a question about trading Dev Alpha
[5:19:44 PM] Michael Weitzel: That's separate from Lany's competition, not mutually exclusive though.
[5:19:54 PM] Michael Weitzel: Sure, hit me.
[5:20:05 PM] Michael Weitzel: What Dev Alpha? A?
[5:20:30 PM] Zubair Abubakar: how do you win the LE?
[5:21:06 PM] Michael Weitzel: The first 250 BfB apps under the new program: "f you are one of the first 250 to get your app approved, you could receive one of the coveted red Limited Edition BlackBerry Z10 smartphones!"
[5:21:11 PM] Zubair Abubakar: and then for the Dev Alpha, can it still be traded for LE?
[5:21:32 PM] Michael Weitzel: No, that program stopped when we launched the platform.
[5:21:43 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:22:33 PM] Zubair Abubakar: is this globally or just for the African competition (Lany's competition)?
[5:22:58 PM] Michael Weitzel: The LE offer is global, like I said that's separate from Lany's.
[5:23:15 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:23:22 PM] Michael Weitzel: Theoretically though you could win both.
[5:23:49 PM] Zubair Abubakar: then you should have gotten the 250 apps by now?
[5:24:45 PM] Michael Weitzel: No idea, don't have visibility into that competition. Don't forget this is for the relaunch of the BfB program which happened two weeks ago.
[5:25:26 PM] Zubair Abubakar: ok cool
[5:26:15 PM] Michael Weitzel: Awesome!
[5:27:22 PM] Zubair Abubakar: What is the idea behind BMM on other platform?
[5:28:07 PM] Zubair Abubakar: doesn't that give away BlackBerry's uinque selling point?
[5:28:29 PM] Michael Weitzel: Good question, from where I stand it is to show users on other platforms one of the strength of the BB platform.
[5:29:42 PM] Michael Weitzel: I think it will show our great engineering capabilities off on Android and iOS, don't think we need to hide behind either of these platforms with regards to capabilities.
[5:30:41 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:30:41 PM] Michael Weitzel: Some of the other OEMs offer similar services 'restricted' to their platform which suffer in uptake due to that, I think we want to overcome that.
[5:31:19 PM] Michael Weitzel: Any other questions? Even 'off topic' is welcome.
[5:32:36 PM] Zubair Abubakar: what is the future of the platform?
[5:33:23 PM] Zubair Abubakar: people are concerned that the platform is dieing?
[5:33:47 PM] Michael Weitzel: Hope you guys are having a ball there! Thanks so much for taking the time to come to the meet-up!!!
[5:37:16 PM] Michael Weitzel: I think now we 'gracefully' degraded from a Skype video call all the way to an email/BBM conversation… (sent you an invite just now).
[5:38:45 PM] Michael Weitzel: All good on your end guys?
[5:39:11 PM] Zubair Abubakar: did you get the last question?
[5:40:27 PM] Michael Weitzel: What's the future? Business as usual. Most of you guys have used the BB10 platform and know how it compares against the competition.
[5:41:30 PM] Zubair Abubakar: yup
[5:41:46 PM] Michael Weitzel: In the last couple of weeks of course the announcement about 'strategic alternatives' as made a lot of waves, let me just draw your attention to an excerpt from the press release: "announced that the Company's Board of Directors has formed a Special Committee to explore strategic alternatives to enhance value and increase scale in order to accelerate BlackBerry 10 deployment"
[5:42:19 PM] Michael Weitzel: Especially the last part: "to accelerate BlackBerry 10 platform"
[5:42:47 PM] Michael Weitzel: The platform is certainly not dying from where I stand (or rather sit at the moment).
[5:42:58 PM] Zubair Abubakar: lol
[5:43:17 PM] Michael Weitzel: We've got devices on the roadmap, features for 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.3 and so on. :D
[5:44:06 PM] Michael Weitzel: Also Nigeria and South Africa are (like Lany said at the Jam) strategic markets for us.
[5:44:39 PM] Zubair Abubakar: true
[5:45:26 PM] Zubair Abubakar: but the data plan on BB10 is expensive compared to the BIS data plan on OS5 -7
[5:46:10 PM] Michael Weitzel: Yup, it's a level playing field with regards to the competition now with regards to data consumption and pricing.
[5:46:16 PM] Zubair Abubakar: this might be a deterent for customers
[5:47:14 PM] Michael Weitzel: As much of a deterrent as it would be for buying an Android, iOS or Windows Phone device I would imagine.
[5:47:36 PM] Zubair Abubakar: yes true
[5:47:36 PM] Michael Weitzel: Also we just launched the 9720, which still offers BBOS with BIS.
[5:47:51 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay
[5:48:15 PM] Michael Weitzel: (At least it's launched in South Africa, not sure whether it's available in Nigeria just yet.)
[5:48:30 PM] Michael Weitzel: It will come though if it isn't.
[5:48:45 PM] Zubair Abubakar: oaky cool
[5:49:44 PM] Michael Weitzel: Should be an interesting second half of this year! ;)
[5:49:47 PM] Zubair Abubakar: do you have information on the number of BlackBerry devices in Nigeria?
[5:50:00 PM] Zubair Abubakar: great!
[5:50:10 PM] Michael Weitzel: Unfortunately not, don't have visibility into the commercial side.
[5:50:34 PM] Zubair Abubakar: okay cool
[5:50:59 PM] Zubair Abubakar: thanks Michael, i believe that is all for now
[5:51:46 PM] Michael Weitzel: Awesome, thanks again for your time on this Saturday afternoon!! Happy coding and GOOD LUCK!!
[5:52:12 PM] Michael Weitzel: Thanks guys!
[5:52:29 PM] Zubair Abubakar: Thank you too, really apreciate your time and answers
[5:52:44 PM] Zubair Abubakar: regards to everyone over there?
[5:52:48 PM] Zubair Abubakar: Cheers
[5:53:11 PM] Michael Weitzel: No worries, anything else comes up, drop me a line! And apologies for the technical difficulties!
[5:53:41 PM] Zubair Abubakar: its okay
[5:54:05 PM] Michael Weitzel: (And off topic, anybody eavesdropping from the NSA: you are not eligible for the $10k competition!!!) :P
[5:55:18 PM] Zubair Abubakar: wait, i didn't catch that

You may ask follow on questions, Happy coding and good luck.
