Dr. Bruce Wang, assistant professor in the Transportation Engineering
Division in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M
University, has been named recipient of the Council of University
Transportation Centers-American Road and Transportation Builders
Association (CUTC-ARTBA) New Faculty Member Award.
The award recognizes outstanding teaching, research and service by a
new tenure track faculty member in transportation. It is one of the
most prestigious awards that a junior faculty can win in the
transportation field in North America.
Wang received his Ph.D. in transportation engineering at the
University of California, Irvine, in 2001 and joined the Zachry
Department of Civil Engineering in Fall 2008. Prior to the current
position, Wang was an assistant professor at the University of
Wisconsin–Superior for four years and a researcher at the National
Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education at the
University of Wisconsin–Madison for two years. In 2006, Wang was named
Wisconsin Teaching Fellow by the University of Wisconsin System.
Wang has conducted research primarily in freight logistics and
intelligent transportation systems. His research interest is in
examining the transportation system in a stochastic and dynamic
setting and on a network in order to improve the system efficiency,
reliability, and sustainability. Wang currently chairs the Freight
Planning and Logistics Committee, and chairs several subcommittees, of
the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies. His
research has been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Federal
Department of Transportation, the Department of Army, the
Transportation Research Board, and other sources.
CUTC represents more than 85 centers, more than 130 member
universities and all the major transportation programs across the
country. Wang will be presented a plaque and a cash stipend of $2,000
at the CUTC annual banquet on Jan. 21 in Washington D.C.
Wang’s recognition came shortly after his first graduate student Kai
Yin won the 2010 CUTC Pikarsky Memorial Award that recognizes an
outstanding M.S. thesis in transportation.
