Hi,
we just released a new website about air pollution in Beijing. This
one shows live statistics out of the twitter feed of the American
embassy.
I'm not an Environment person myself but rather a software developer
who is interested on this topic. Consequently, I'd be very happy to
get some feedback on what kind of data I can incorporate in the
future. Please feel free to write to me on the BJ GreenDrinks mailing
list or privately on foggybeijing at gmail dot com.

Also, we have published a cool widget that you can easily embed on
your blog/website if you're interested.
Here is the website: http://foggybeijing.com
And the associated blog: http://foggybeijing.com/blog/?p=11

I can also send you the instructions by email on how to embed live
data on pollution on your website (I'll soon publish a blog entry on
that).

Thanx!
Michael.

Hi,
I thought the website was interesting, it seems there is a little
overlap with bjair.info that also pulls in Guangzhou data, but they
don't have a blog like you do.
I would like to know if there is any way to predict air pollution, ie.
I want to go hiking this weekend, the weather forecast says it will be
clear, but what about the air pollution? Would that be a matter of
pulling in Chinese govn't data from multiple cities and predicting the
movement? I just thought I'd throw it out there.

best,
chris eberhardt

Hi Christopher,
thanx for your feedback. My first intent when creating foggybeijing was to provide history about air pollution in Beijing. bjair.info is a nice website but it only provides real time data. History is really important when you want to know if things are getting better or not.

To answer your question regarding pollution forecast, I have attended a conference recently that was discussing that very topic. Air pollution doesn't seem too hard to predict. Beijing is a flat area surrounded with mountains. So as time goes, the pollution fills the city up and there are 2 things that can make the pollution go away: in winter that's the wind, and in summer the rain washes up the air from pollution. So just check your weather forecast and you should know if the air is likely to be polluted or not.
I'm not an Environmental Scientist myself (rather a software developer), but that's what I could understand from this conference.

Cheers,
Michael.
