SCO/EXABYTE CONNECTIVITY ANNOUNCED
SCO Server and Workstation Operating Systems/
Exabyte Tape Drives Now Linked
BOULDER, Colo., July 27, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. and The Santa Cruz
Operation, Inc. (SCO) have come together to bring added functionality to
users of UNIX Systems on Intel platforms. The two companies
announced today the joint development of software driver support that
enables resident connectivity between SCO's Open Systems Software
family of UNIX server and desktop operating systems, and Exabyte's
entire multi-technology tape drive family. Support of Exabyte devices will
be included in an SCO-SLS (support-level supplement) release to be
issued by SCO later this month.
As a result of the SCO/Exabyte connectivity, users of SCO Open Server
and SCO Open Desktop systems can now easily install Exabyte drives
and use them to store data. Compact, reliable and high-performing,
Exabyte drives are designed to meet the demanding computing
requirements of UNIX environments.
SCO is the world's leading developer and supplier of UNIX Systems
software for computers based on Intel microprocessors. Open Server and
Open Desktop operating systems support over 8,000 UNIX Systems
applications, the complete library of MS-DOS and MS-Windows
applications, and over 8 million end users in client/server and multiuser
environments. According to International Data Corp. (IDC), SCO Open
Systems Software accounts for approximately one-quarter of all UNIX
Systems installed worldwide.
Exabyte is the world's largest independent manufacturer focused solely
on tape storage products. The company's family of 8mm, 4mm and
quarter-inch tape drives offers storage capacities ranging from 750
megabytes to up to 10 gigabytes for backup and other storage
applications in LANs, network servers, workstations and PCs. Exabyte
drives also provide transfer rates of up to 1 megabyte per second and
high reliability of up to 160,000 hours mean-time-between-failure. The
company has an installed overall products base in excess of 700,000
units.
"Doing business with SCO gives us the opportunity to serve a large base
of end users who, thanks to resident connectivity, can now easily access
our products," said Mark W. Canright, Exabyte's senior vice president of
worldwide marketing and sales.
"Because SCO and Exabyte are focused on the same market segments, we
can add value and functionality to one another's products," said Andy
Green, SCO's vice president of strategic alliances. "This level of synergy
is of real benefit to the end user, ensuring compatibility and providing
optimal performance."
The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOC) is the world leader
for UNIX System servers (source: IDC). Businesses and governments use
SCO Open Systems Software to run their critical operations, accessing
information across local, national and international boundaries and
networks. Headquartered in Santa Cruz, Calif., SCO sells and support its
products in more than 80 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, resellers, systems integrators and OEMs.
In addition to its line of tape drives, Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT)
also designs, manufactures and markets tape libraries and recording
media. Based in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte ships its products through a
worldwide network of original equipment manufacturers, value-added
resellers and distributors.
