SCO Visual Tcl is a new technology that extends the Tcl 7.3 scripting
environment with Motif 1.2-specific commands, as well as the TclX
UNIX access and debugging library. SCO Visual Tcl provides the core
graphical user interface-building scripting environment for SCO's next
generation of operating environments, code-named "Everest."
SCO Visual Tcl 1.0 includes 3 display engines:
1. OSF Motif 1.2 Display Engine
2. "Character Motif" Display Engine
3. IXI Wintif Display Engine (for the Windows look & feel)
SCO Visual Tcl 1.0 is now available from the ftp site:
ftp.sco.com
mget pub/TLS/tls035*
- There are 4 files: 1 is a README (tls035c.ltr), the other 3 are
3 1/2" diskette images. Use "dd" to copy them to diskettes,
then use "custom" to install. Example:
dd if=tls035c.1 of=/dev/rfd0135ds18, then insert new diskette
dd if=tls035c.2 of=/dev/rfd0135ds18, then insert new diskette
dd if=tls035c.3 of=/dev/rfd0135ds18

Visual Tcl is ideal for
- system administrators who would like to wrap Motif interfaces
around UNIX commands,
- hardware vendors who want to create Motif-based configuration
and administrative interfaces,
- software designers who want a flexible environment to quickly
prototype easy-to-rework Motif application interfaces, and
- software vendors who want to take advantage of "thin client"
scripting to integrate their applications with Motif-compliant
small-to-medium sized tools.
Key Features of SCO Visual Tcl include...
- DrawnList Widget (object browser similar to Microsoft File Manager)
- Event-driven (callback) environment
- Display engines for Motif 1.2 and curses-based Character Motif,
as well as MS Windows a la the IXI Wintif technology.
- Point Help, Context-sensitive Help, and Status Line
- Convenience Function Library
- includes ComboBox, Spin support, and assorted
widget combinations (e.g. text fields with labels or titles)
- Motif geometry management (Forms, RowColumn and Bulletinboard)
- Based on Public Domain U.C. Berkeley Tcl 7.3b
- POSIX-specific and other tclX library extensions
- e.g. fcntl, select, nice, kill, sockets, fmtclock, trace
- Package library support, as well as vtcllib.a and header files for
those wishing to extend the Visual Tcl interpreter with C-based
routines.
SCO has also made BETA Visual Tcl available for Solaris and SunOS RISC
platforms under the banner of "IXI Visual Tcl." Visual Tcl will be ported
to other RISC platforms including IBM AIX, HP HP-UX and DEC OSF/1.
The BETA Solaris and SunOS ports are available at:
