Celebris XL and Alpha XL -- Digital Personal Workstation for Windows NT

HIGHLIGHTS

o Leadership personal workstations at PC prices

o Engineered to meet future demands for flexibility, allowing upgrades to
faster Intel and Alpha CPUs and options

o Choice of either RISC or CISC processors depending upon the application
and price/performance that is right for the user

o PC ease-of-use experience with factory-installed Windows NT software

o Performance characterization of key applications across the entire line

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Digital personal workstation product family, comprised of Celebris XL
Pentium models and Alpha XL models, is targeted at the rapidly expanding
market of Windows NT based workstations. The XL family uses an enhanced
minitower design, the forerunner of which was widely shipped on the Celebris
XL PC family. The XL systems come with factory-installed Windows NT software
and provide full access to those PC options supported under Microsoft's
Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for the appropriate processor type. Using
a processor-independent, CPU daughtercard approach, all family members have
interchangeable components and are easily upgradeable, thus ensuring the
highest level of investment protection.

Benefits

o Industry standards -- Supports both industry standard CISC CPUs and
performance-leading 64 bit RISC CPUs, making this a superb Windows NT
workstation platform.

o Performance -- Supports today's leading applications in both technical
(MCAD, ECAD, and CASE) and commercial (desktop publishing, office
productivity, finance, and database) environments.

o Price -- Leadership dollars per SPECmark for Windows NT systems.

o Investment protection -- Provides future upgradability to more powerful
CPU chips and offers the industry's best warranty.

o Open system -- Industry-standard PCI/ISA options available through a
variety of suppliers.

(1)The SYSmarkNT benchmarks were generated using similar system
configurations, consisting of 32 MB of memory, a 1 GB SCSI disk, and a
Diamond Stealth64 video card. Results are very dependent on the type of
configuration, with the Matrox 3D card producing slightly lower results.
Increasing memory in the systems generally increases the scores. Celebris
XL and Alpha XL scaling is similar for Excel, Texim, and Word products.
The Celebris XL displays a clear advantage in running emulated 16 bit
applications (PowerPoint), while the Alpha XL displays a clear advantage
running more technical applications that use floating point calculations.

(2)ANSYS R5.1 is a solid modeling benchmark program produced by ANSYS, Inc.,
and supplied to hardware vendors. Each benchmark represents a
cantilevered plate with one element through its thickness. There are five
cases, with mesh size varying for the different cases. A force is applied
to the plate at the free end. CPU time and elapsed time are reported.
Comparisons are based only on elapsed time, as perceived by the user. All
tests were performed using 32 MB of memory, 1 GB SCSI disk, and a Matrox
video card.

(3)The CADalyst benchmark, created by CADalyst Magazine, allows users to
compare AutoCAD performance across a number of applications: removing
hidden lines, opening and closing files, regenerating and redrawing the
screen, creating DXF files, and creating Plotfiles. All tests were
performed using 32 MB of memory, 1 GB SCSI disk, and a Matrox video card.

(4)Two Pro/Jr. benchmark trail files were used in this test. JRDEMO95 is a
trail file created by Parametric Technology Corporation that creates
features, parts, drawings, and assemblies to create a microscope. It also
includes shaded view manipulations. JRALL is a Digital benchmark file
that focuses more on feature/part/drawing/assembly manipulations and
includes operations such as feature reorder, suppress, resume,
regeneration, and shaded view manipulations, all within part assembly and
drawing mode. Comparisons are based only on elapsed time, as perceived by
the user. All tests were performed using 32 MB of memory, 1 GB SCSI disk,
and a Diamond Stealth video card. As this is a 2D application, the Matrox
3D card results in 15 to 25 percent less performance for this
application.

(5)CADbench is a fully automated benchmark program designed to run with
Microstation software. Developed by Intergraph and Microstation Manager
magazine, CADbench is a set of tests that focuses on I/O performance,
vector drawing performance, image rendering performance, and element
generation performance. The Rendering benchmark consisted of comparisons
for three different Microstation drawings (oldhotel, locomotive, and
liv_room). All tests were performed using 32 MB of memory, 1 GB SCSI
disk, and a Matrox video card. The Celebris systems ran Microstation V5.0
and the Alpha systems ran Microstation V5.5. Both the Matrox 3D and
Diamond Stealth 2D performed at similar levels for this application.

AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING

All product variants exist in two models: a building-block kernel system and
an entry level packaged system with Windows NT factory installed. The new
Celebris XL and Alpha XL minimal kernel and entry level packaged Windows NT
systems can be ordered now and will begin shipping in September 1995
(October 1995 for the Celebris XL 133DP model).

All variants support Windows NT 3.51 (or later only). The operating system
is factory-installed on the entry level package systems or when a full
configuration (inclusive of CD-ROM, hard disk, and video) is ordered using
the building block model. In all cases, Windows NT media and documentation
are shipped with all factory installed models.

Building block kernel base systems

Kernel model base systems contain 16 MB of memory, a 1.44 MB floppy disk
drive, and a U.S. Country Kit containing keyboard, power cord, three button
mouse, and user guide. For the Celebris XL, a Windows NT operating system
kit and CD-ROM drive must be ordered separately. For the Alpha XL, a Windows
NT operating system kit is bundled in the U.S. Country Kit; a CD-ROM drive
is included in the kernel.

All options ordered with kernel systems will be factory installed unless
specified as spares. All systems shipped from manufacturing are set to 120
volts, and may be reset by the user as required.

Entry packaged system

o Factory installed Windows NT 3.51 operating system
o Windows NT operating system media kit and documentation
o "Getting started" software installed
o Keyboard, mouse, and power cord
o 1.44 MB floppy drive
o 600 MB 4X CD-ROM drive
o 1 GB SCSI disk
o Matrox Millennium 3D graphics card
o User documentation package
o System memory

The Celebris XL entry packaged system contains 16 MB of memory. The Alpha XL
entry packaged system contains 32 MB of memory. Multimedia, sound,
networking, and communication adapters are selected from the options menu.
All options ordered with packaged systems will be factory installed unless
specified as spares. Systems can be set to 120 or 240 volts. All U.S.
systems shipped from manufacturing are set to 120 volts, and all worldwide
systems are set to 240 volts. Either system may be reset by the user as
required.
