DIGITAL'S HIGH PERFORMANCE ALL-PENTIUM LINE FEATURES
SINGLE- AND DUAL-PROCESSOR PCs
...Workstation-class Performance at PC prices...
MAYNARD, Mass. -- March 6, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
boosted its award-winning XL technology today with the introduction
of its new Celebris XL line of Pentium processor-based PCs,
replacing the popular DECpc XL series. The Celebris XL systems
offer PC power users workstation-class performance and maximum
investment protection at PC prices. The seven new deskside models
-- three fully configured and four configured specifically for
resellers -- include powerful features, such as:
o choice of 90MHz and 100MHz single- and dual-processor
Pentium systems;
o 64-bit graphics accelerators, PCI/ISA subsystems and burst
cache for increased performance;
o upgrades to dual-Pentium and Alpha processors for maximum
investment protection;
o ease-of-use features for advanced productivity; and
o wide operating system support for application flexibility
The Celebris XL line is the sixth in the series of major new
product introductions from Digital's Personal Computer Business Unit
over the past six months. The Celebris XL family completes the move
to Digital's new naming convention and includes its acclaimed
"Getting Started" software that helps users become productive, more
quickly.
"The Celebris XL line builds on the popular DECpc XL features
that gained wide customer acceptance," said Bernhard Auer, vice
president and general manager of Digital's PC Business Unit.
"Today's new processors and features, combined with the new ease-
of-use features, give us the "hottest" desktop for PC power users
on the market today."
High Performance PCs
The Celebris XL line includes five models: two single- and one
dual-processor 90MHz systems; and both single- and dual-processor
100MHz systems to help meet the complex computing needs of business
and scientific users. The new systems feature S3 Vision864 and
Diamond Stealth 64-bit PCI video accelerator controllers, and
leading-edge PCI/ISA I/O subsystems. Three of the models feature
synchronous burst cache memory, which increases performance by up
to 10 percent over systems with standard cache memory. Celebris XL
benchmarks include a Winstone '95 benchmark rating of 145.9 and a
DOS Mark 16 rating of 963.63.
The no-compromise performance of the Celebris XL line is
well-suited for PC users who run multiple applications and databases
as well as applications in graphical design and CAD, software
development, statistical analysis, and desktop publishing.
Maximum Investment Protection: Upgradeable to Dual Pentium and Alpha
Using an innovative motherboard/daughtercard modular design,
the Celebris XL line provides an unparalleled upgrade path from
Pentium single-processor to Pentium dual-processor to Alpha
processors. Called the PowerGrade program, the upgrade capability
offers superior investment protection and is ideal for buyers who
need a top-of-the-line CISC platform today, but may require RISC
architecture in the future.
"The Celebris XL family gives customers no-compromise
performance, award-winning architecture and leading-edge
functionality," said Howard Elias, vice president, Desktop Product
Line. "And because the Celebris XL line is processor independent,
it is one of the most expandable and upgradeable PCs in the world."
Product Functionality: Easy to Use, Easy to Install, Easy to Deploy
The state-of-the-art functionality of Digital's Celebris XL
line makes it easy to use from the time users power-on the system.
The new systems implement dynamic Plug and Play technology, which
allows users to automatically configure add-in cards. Advanced
Power Management (APM) features include system/suspend time-outs,
hard disk drive time-outs, and a quick hot key. APM reduces system
power consumption, resulting in lower operating costs.
The Celebris XL line is easy to install and easy to deploy.
The products come in easy-to-open packaging and include a fold-out
"Quick Set-up Users Guide." The systems feature Digital's "Getting
Started" enhanced user interface software for easy system set-up at
power on. In addition, the Celebris XL systems are the first
Digital PCs to provide on-line documentation for MS-DOS and Windows
for Workgroups. The easy-to-access screwless deskside enclosure
offers maximum expansion but is compact enough to sit on top of, or
beside, a desk.
Digital's Celebris XL line is Desktop Management Interface
(DMI) ready, which will provide significant advancements in network
administration of an organization's client/server computing
environment. DMI will allow desktop client hardware and software
status reporting, asset management across a network, remote
diagnostics of client PCs, and improved management of a company's
enterprise-wide, distributed computing environment.
High Performance Operating System Support and Value Added Software
The Celebris XL line comes installed with MS-DOS and Microsoft
Windows for Workgroups and a variety of value-added software, such
as QA Plus diagnostic software for users and systems administrators
and a diskette back-up utility for pre-installed software. The
systems are also Microsoft Windows 95 ready. In addition, the
Celebris XL line supports a wide selection of certified network
operating systems, including Windows NT, Banyan Vines, Novell
NetWare and Digital PATHWORKS. NeXTstep, OS/2, OS/2 SMP and SCO
UNIX will be certified in the future.
Pricing and Availability
Prices range from an entry-level Celebris XL 590 single-
processor system priced at $2,649 to a dual-processor Celebris XL
5100 at $4,799. Four Celebris XL systems are configured as single-
and dual-processor 90MHz and 100MHz models and do not include hard
drives. The new PC line also comes with Digital's worldwide service
and support through a limited three-year warranty, including
one-year on-site, where available.
