DIGITAL ANNOUNCES ENERGY STAR DESKTOP PCs,
NOTEBOOKS AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS

MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 17, 1994 -- As part of its strategy to
drive volume through an expanded portfolio of highly competitive
personal computer products, Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced 14 new personal computer systems, including new DECpc LPv+
Energy Star desktop systems, notebooks, and its first PC desktop
publishing solution.

The five new DECpc LPv+ models offer full functionality, with
advanced energy saving features in a slimline enclosure starting at
$1,049. The five new notebooks include four models with monochrome
or dual-scan passive color displays starting at $1,899 and a
high-end active matrix color notebook priced at $4,399. Digital's
four new 486 PC desktop publishing systems, with industry-leading,
Windows-based publishing software, start at $8,989.

"The Digital Personal Computer Business Unit has just completed
another very successful year -- continuing our aggressive growth and
gaining market share," said Enrico Pesatori, vice president and
general manager of Digital's Personal Computer Business Unit.
"Today's new products, coupled with the well-received DECpc XL
products we announced in November, should propel us to even greater
success in 1994."

Digital Goes "Green"

Digital's DECpc LPv+ systems update its successful LPv series,
introduced just five months ago. The new DECpc LPv+ series uses
Advanced Power Management and offers a full complement of three ISA
slots and four bays. A DECpc LPv+ system, with monitor, consumes
less than 26 Watts when in sleep mode, considerably less than the 60
Watts required by the EPA for Energy Star compliance.

While helping the environment by cutting energy consumption,
the new systems can provide substantial savings to both individual
users and large organizations. EPA usage estimates show a typical
installation of 1,000 Energy Star compliant personal computers could
result in yearly savings of $17,000 to $45,000.

"This makes good sense. Many of our customers want energy
efficient systems. Most governments demand them, not only because
of the potential savings but because it is the right thing to do,"
commented Harry Copperman, vice president, U.S. Sales and Marketing
for Digital's PC Business Unit. "At Digital, we have a corporate
culture that encourages conservation, and we have been widely
recognized for our environmental efforts in manufacturing, packaging
and recycling. Now, Digital is a leader with our PC products, too."

The DECpc LPv+ series includes Intel SL-enhanced processors
ranging from 425sx through 466d2. The systems include 4MB RAM
(upgradable to 64MB), 8K internal cache (with an external cache of
up to 256K), S3 805 local bus video, an upgradable CPU, and a 170 or
340MB hard drive.

Enhanced features include support for three modes of floppy
disk drives (720K, 1.44MB and 2.88MB) and a 16550 buffer serial port
UARTS. The new, 340MB hard drive replaces the LPv's 245MB hard
drive at no extra cost.

The new, enhanced systems are priced the same as the LPv
series, ranging from $1,049 for the DECpc 425sx LPv+ with 4MB RAM
and a 170MB hard drive, to $2,169 for the DECpc 466d2 LPv+ with 8MB
RAM and a 340MB hard drive. All systems come with DOS and Windows
3.1 factory installed, and are available immediately worldwide.

Digital Goes Mobile

Digital extended the company's mobile offerings with four
dual-scan passive matrix color notebook systems, and a new active
matrix color notebook.

"A growing number of PC buyers are interested in mobile
computing solutions," commented Jesse Parker, director of product
management for Digital's PC Business Unit. "With these new
notebooks we expect to build our mobile PC unit volume considerably
because we can now give customers a broad choice of mobile systems
at very competitive prices."

The DECpc 425 SE systems feature a large 9.5" monochrome or
dual-scan passive matrix color screen, type III PCMCIA slot,
built-in trackball, 4MB RAM, 120 or 170MB hard drives, and include
DOS 6.2 with DoubleSpace and Windows.

With advanced power management, selectable standby modes and
intelligent peripheral time-outs, the notebooks deliver two-to-three
hours battery life -- up to six hours with the optional external
battery pack. A convenient fuel gauge informs users of the
remaining time on a battery charge. The monochrome models weigh 5.5
lb. and measure 8.8" x 11.7" x 1.5", while the dual-scan passive
color models weigh 6.2 lb. and measure 8.8" x 11.7" x 1.7". The
DECpc 425 SE notebooks start at $1,899 and are available
immediately.

The new DECpc 433 SLC active matrix color notebook brings the
power of 33Mhz processing to mobile users. The system includes a
200MB removable hard drive, a PCMCIA Type III slot that accepts two
Type I or II devices, or a single Type III device, a 9.5" display,
an external SVGA video port, and DOS 6.2 with DoubleSpace and
Windows. For people who want to use a notebook on the road and in
the office, the system also accepts an optional docking station and
docking port. With all of these features, the DECpc 433 SLC
notebook offers up to six-and-a-half hours of battery life per
charge and desktop functionality in a 6.8 lb., 8.5" x 11.5" x 2.0"
notebook system. It will be available in the U.S. in February
priced at $4,399.

Digital Goes to Press

The new Digital PC Publishing Solution is a turnkey package
that includes pre-installed and tuned software and drivers in a
fast, i486 EISA/VL minitower configuration with SuperMac Thunder/24
for Windows graphics card and calibrator and Adobe software, and the
choice of two of the leading desktop publishing applications, Aldus
PageMaker or QuarkXPress.

The Digital PC Publishing Solution can utilize the capabilities
of many of the leading networking systems including Digital
PATHWORKS and Novell NetWare. Users can also read Apple Quadra
generated PageMaker and QuarkXPress files, while being supported by
all of the utilities, communications and peripherals under Windows.
Digital's PC Publishing Solution is rated at 4.8 photostones*.
Priced at $8,989 or $11,999, depending on the configuration,
Digital's PC Publishing Solution is two to three times faster than
the Dell i486 EISA and the Apple Quadra 950 systems.

"People in publishing succeed or fail depending on the time it
takes to design and publish. With this new system Digital is a
leader in giving customers the best in publishing software in the
world's most popular operating environment, Windows, with
performance that will help pay the bills," said Copperman.

The basic system includes a DECpc MTE minitower with a i486/66
processor, 128KB external cache, 525MB SCSI hard drive, 32MB RAM, a
17" monitor and the SuperMac Thunder/24 VL graphics card and color
calibrator. Software includes DOS and Windows, Adobe Illustrator,
Streamline, Type Align, Type Manager and Photoshop and 200 Adobe
typefaces, as well as the choice of Aldus PageMaker or QuarkXPress.
The higher end system includes a larger, 256KB external cache, a 1GB
SCSI hard drive, a SCSI Photo/CD ROM, and a 19" monitor. The
Digital PC Publishing Solution offers a consistent true color
display of 17.6M colors. All desktop publishing systems are
available immediately in the U.S. and Canada.

All of the systems announced today are available through
Digital channel partners, including master resellers, wholesalers,
distributors, dealers, VARS and system integrators, as well as the
Digital PC Catalog and direct sales organizations. They are covered
by Digital's three-year personal computer limited warranty and will
be promoted through the company's aggressive demand-generation
programs, including a newly-launched PC advertising campaign.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open
client/server solutions from personal computers to integrated
