That could be a physical problem, but more likely only logical...
Not enough info to determine a problem that won't be solved by simply
using FDISK to delete the affected partition and then recreate it,
before formatting (try that).

what you can do is go to www.bootdisk.com
and in their utility downloads get aefdisk.exe
copy it to your boot floppy and instead of runninf fdisk
run aefdisk/delall
the delall switch should completely wipe the drive
then you can run fdisk from dos and recreate your partition(s)
reboot
and format
If he cant recreate the symbols then he cannot delete the partition as the
volume label has to be entered to delete.

Hmm, maybe just as easy to put into a working system and
relabel/format in windows.
Oh, there may be a better way...
Format /autotest
The /autotest switch will format without any further user input.
That is likely to run into the same problem, with bigger data
risks. Try cutting and pasting from the display of the "funny
character label".
