<CLARI-ITEM STORY>

SAN FRANCISCO, March 25 (UPI) -- A published report says that some of
the families of 25 victims killed in a 1991 United Airlines plane crash
are suing the airline for allegedly tampering with evidence from the
wreckage.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports today (Tuesday) the suit, filed
in San Mateo County Superior Court, accuses the airline of destroying
evidence that could have helped them prove that a faulty rudder
component on the Boeing 737 caused the tragedy.

The suit says items from the wreckage were taken to the United
Airlines Maintenance Operations Center near San Francisco International
Airport and later to an aerospace facility in Irvine.

United Airlines spokeswoman Mary Jo Holland told the newspaper that
the company has not seen the lawsuit and denies any wrongdoing or
improper handling of the aircraft after the accident.

Holland says the National Transportation Safety Board has not
determined the cause of the crash.

Also named in the suit were Boeing, which manufactured the plane, and
two other companies that manufactured the allegedly defective equipment.

An attorney for the victims' familes says the plane might have
crashed because the rudder that controls the direction of the plane's
nose had a defective part.

A separate wrongful death suit against the company filed by the
victims' families is pending in federal court in Denver.
