<P> JERUSALEM, March 25 (Reuter) - Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat's Fatah movement is calling for demonstrations against
Israel's construction of housing for Jews in Arab East
Jerusalem, Fatah leaders said on Tuesday.</P>
<P> The leaders, meeting in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour on
Sunday, called Israel's building of 6,500 apartments ``an act of
terrorism'' and urged followers to prepare to ``confront
settlements and settlers by all legitimate means.''</P>
<P> ``Our objective is to raise our voice to the world against
settlement activity. But we are not calling for violence,''
Mahmoud Jasser, a Fatah spokesman in the West Bank district of
Ramallah, told Reuters.</P>
<P> The Fatah meeting called for blocking roads used by Jewish
settlers in the West Bank and for mass marches. It urged
Arafat's Palestinian Authority to suspend peace talks and sever
all contacts with Israel.</P>
<P> The Yesha Jewish settlers council blasted the decision and
called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take
action against Fatah.</P>
<P> ``The Fatah decision to renew armed struggle, harm Israelis,
close bypass roads and call to restart the intifada (uprising)
requires uncompromising action against its ranks, the terror
reserve of Arafat,'' Yesha said in a statement.</P>
<P> Jasser said Fatah had been under public pressure to take the
lead in confronting Israeli settlement plans.</P>
<P> ``We consider Israel's building a massacre against Jerusalem
and we must try to defend the city,'' he said.</P>
<P> Scores of Palestinians have been injured by rubber bullets
and teargas fired by Israeli soldiers in West Bank clashes.</P>
<P> Palestinians envisage making a future capital of East
Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war and
annexed, declaring it part of the Jewish state's ``eternal,
indivisible'' capital.</P>
