<P> TIRANA, March 25 (Reuter) - Four policemen were killed in
Albania overnight, three of them in the rebel-held southern town
of Vlore in an apparent ambush by criminals, police said on
Tuesday.</P>
<P> In Vlore, three policemen were chasing a suspected stolen
car late on Monday night when gunmen in two other cars blocked
their way and opened fire with automatic weapons, killing them
instantly.</P>
<P> The interior ministry confirmed that another policeman was
killed in the capital Tirana during the night, though it had no
details of the incident.</P>
<P> The killings underlined calls for some sort of international
force to protect a major European humanitarian effort being
launched to help the stricken Balkan country.</P>
<P> Many towns in the south of the country, seized by rebels who
rose against the previous government in anger over failed
savings schemes, are effectively under the control of armed
gangs, many with a criminal background.</P>
<P> The north of the country is under government control, but
there are thousands of weapons in private hands after an orgy of
looting of military depots earlier this month.</P>
<P> On Monday, European Union foreign ministers said they would
not object to individual countries sending troops to act as
military escorts for aid but for the second time in eight days
shied away from organising its own multinational force to help
restore order in Albania.</P>
<P> A policeman in Vlore, shocked by the murder of his
colleagues, told Reuters on Tuesday: ``If the government doesn't
provide us with the security equipment we need, such as armoured
cars, we will quit.''</P>
