<CLARI-ITEM STORY>
<P> LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- Frances McDormand has won the best
actress Oscar for her performance as the folksy, pregnant Minnesota
sheriff in the dark comedy ``Fargo.''</P>
<P> McDormand, 39, was directed in her winning performance by her
husband, Oscar nominee Joel Coen.</P>
<P> All five movies in the best actress field were independent projects
and the best-known nominee was Diane Keaton for ``Marvin's Room,'' which
was not a major box-office draw. Those factors made the competition very
close.</P>
<P> But McDormand had strong backing from critics as well as the Screen
Actors Guild Award.</P>
<P> In ``Fargo,'' McDormand personified a dowdy but affable central
Minnesotan, a law enforcement officer more likely to use the word
``freeze'' to describe the weather than as a command to a fleeing
suspect.</P>
<P> She was far from glamorous as she waddled through snow drifts, the
earflaps of her hat pulled down, using regional idiom such as ``yah''
and ``you betcha.''</P>
<P> She said, ``Joel was always telling me, 'You don't have to look that
bad.'''</P>
<P> But McDormand says she prefers to ``err on the side of truthfulness.''</P>
<P> While she was acting pregnant on location in Minnesota, she and Coen
were adopting their son, Pedro, from Paraguay.</P>
<P> McDormand met Joel Coen and his brother Ethan when she auditioned and
was cast in their first feature together, ``Blood Simple'' in 1984. She
later appeared in the Coens' comedy ``Raising Arizona.''</P>
<P> In addition to ``Fargo,'' McDormand also was seen last year in
``Primal Fear'' and ``Lone Star.'' Her other screen credits include
``Short Cuts,'' ``The Butcher's Wife,'' and ``Mississippi Burning,'' for
which she received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination in 1988.</P>
<P> She has two movies due in April: dramas ``Paradise Road'' and ``Talk
of Angels.''</P>
