<CLARI-ITEM STORY>
<P> LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- It's a safe bet that no one was talking
Oscar when Geoffrey Rush was cast as emotionally disturbed pianist David
Helfgott in the movie ``Shine.''</P>
<P> But Rush was carried to the best actor Oscar Monday night by a tide
of rave reviews for his performance and wins at the Golden Globes and
the Screen Actors Guild Awards.</P>
<P> The Australian actor is a stage veteran in his homeland but had only
three previous movie credits. The producers had trouble finding
financial backing for the project when they learned a relative unknown
was to star.</P>
<P> He made note of it in his Golden Globe acceptance speech, saying,
``To all those people who were happy to bankroll the film as long as I
wasn't in it....'' He then waved the trophy in the air in a victory
gesture.</P>
<P> The real concert pianist Helfgott played for the movie's sound, but
Rush studied piano for the role and it was his fingers shown on screen
scrambling intricately up and down the keyboard.</P>
<P> On the night of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Rush explained his
approach to Helfgott's character as a playful Don Quixote type who was
unaware of his own mental illness.</P>
<P> ``Shine'' also was nominated for best picture and earned Oscar bids
for director Scott Hicks and supporting actor Armin Mueller-Stahl.</P>
<P> Rush, 45, already has come a long way from the late '70s when he and
fellow struggling actor Mel Gibson slept on the floor of an Australian
stage production of ``Waiting for Godot.''</P>
<P> Rush next will be seen as Inspector Javert (``zhah-VAIR''') in a new
movie version of Victor Hugo's ``Les Miserables.''</P>
