<CLARI-ITEM STORY>
<P> LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- Anthony Minghella of ``The English
Patient'' has captured the best director honor at the 69th annual
Academy Awards, a victory that had been foreshadowed by his win earlier
this month at the Directors Guild Awards.</P>
<P> The 43-year-old Minghella had been the heavy
favorite going into Monday night's Oscars, between the DGA honor and the
fact that ``The English Patient'' had 12 nominations, the most of any
film this year.</P>
<P> The movie, a best picture nominee, is a romantic epic set in World
War II, dealing with an explorer who has an affair with a colleague's
aristocratic wife, and the tragic result of that romance. Ralph Fiennes
and Kristin Scott Thomas both received nominations
in lead acting categories for their performances.</P>
<P> Minghella recently said the movie's meaning is hard to say concisely.</P>
<P> ``It is hard to say what (the film) is about in a single sentence,''
he said. ``But 'the heart is an organ of fire' was on a card I kept over
my desk when I was writing.''</P>
<P> His screenplay adapted from Michael Ondaatje's novel also was
nominated for an Oscar.</P>
<P> Minghella, an Englishman, won in what many industry pundits have
proclaimed the year of the independents, when small projects fared
better in awards nominations that those put out by major Hollywood
Studios.</P>
<P> ``The English Patient,'' produced by veteran Saul Zaentz, was
distributed by Miramax Films. 20th Century Fox originally green-lighted
the $31 million movie but pulled out five weeks before filming was set
to begin.</P>
<P> Minghella's previous film credits are ``Truly, Madly, Deeply'' and
``Mr. Wonderful.''</P>
