<CLARI-ITEM STORY>
<P> LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - The independent film, ``The English
Patient,'' quickly set its mark on the Academy Awards on Monday
night, taking three of the early Oscars, including best
supporting actress for Juliette Binoche.</P>
<P> The film, set in the North African desert in World War II,
also won for best art direction and best costume design. It was
also a contender for nine other awards to be announced later in
the evening.</P>
<P> The best supporting actor Oscar at the 69th Academy Awards
went to Cuba Gooding Jr. for his role as a struggling
professional football player in Jerry Maguire, the only major
studio-produced film to be nominated in a top category.</P>
<P> In his role, Gooding came out with one of the most popular
movie sayings of the season when he said to sports agent Jerry
Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, ``Show me the money.''</P>
<P> Binoche, a French-born actress who has made films in both
her native language and in English, and who was a first-time
Oscar nominee, paid homage to the woman many had expected to
take the best supporting actress award -- veteran actress Lauren
Bacall for her role in ``The Mirror Has Two Faces.''</P>
<P> ``It's true, I didn't prepare anything. I thought Lauren was
going to get it and she deserves it,'' Binoche said in thanking
the Academy of Arts and Sciences for her Oscar. It was Macall's
first nomination and many saw her as the sentimental favorite
after a long carerer in films.</P>
<P> Madonna, denied a nomination for her role in the opera
''Evita'' as Eva Peron, the wife of Argentine strongman Juan
Peron, received a warm welcome from the glittering, star-studded
audience as she sang the film's showstopper, ``You Must Love
Me,'' by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, which was nominated
for best song.</P>
<P> Also present in a gold-plated wheelchair was Larry Flynt,
the controversial publisher of ``Hustler'' magazine. As he
arrived for the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium a light plane
flew overhead trailing a banner reading, ``Columbia Studios
Sucks -- Larry Flynt.''</P>
<P> Columbia was the production company for the film, ``The
People vs. Larry Flynt.'' Woody Harrelson, who portrayed Flynt
in the movie, was up for a best actor Oscar and it was not
immediately clear who was responsible for the banner or what was
behind its message.</P>
<P> Walt Disney Studios also came under an aerial bombardment
over its alleged sweatshop practices in Haiti, where some of
Disney's clothing and memorablia lines are manufactured.</P>
<P> ``Disney uses sweatshops -- 30 cents an hour in Haiti,'' a
skyborne banner read.</P>
<P> On another political note, the Rev. Jesse Jackson railed
against racism in Hollywood ahead of the Oscars, a year after
the civil rights activist picketed the event.</P>
<P> ``Today there are still too few people of color being hired
as writers, directors, and producers,'' Jackson said. ``It would
seem the aspirations of blacks, Latinos and others have hit
perpetual yield signs and in most cases have been held up at red
lights throughout this lucrative industry.''</P>
<P> Meanwhile, nothing could spoil the pleasure of thousands of
movie fans who gathered outside the auditorium to watch their
favorite stars arrive.</P>
<P> They reserved their loudest cheers not for a movie
personality but for boxing great Muhammed Ali as he walked up
the red carpet. Ali was at the Oscars for the documentary ``When
We Were Kings,'' a film about his famous 1974 prize fight with
George Foreman in Zaire.</P>
<P> Legions of fans, some of whom had been outside since
Thursday, were armed with cameras, hoping to snap a picture of
their favorite stars.</P>
<P> ``I slept on the concrete,'' Kenan Jones, who had camped out
for two nights, said. ``It hurt bad, but it was worth it.''</P>
<P> Other hardy fans had been camping in the temporary stands
since they were erected Thursday.</P>
<P> ``The English Patient,'' which picked up the most
nominations with 12, was thought to have a chance of winning for
best picture, but was up against a Tom Cruise blockbuster,
''Jerry Maguire,'' and three quirky independently produced
films, ``Secrets &amp; Lies,'' ``Shine'' and ``Fargo.''</P>
<P> Lead actors Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas and ``The
English Patient'' director Anthony Minghella were nominated,
along with Juliette Binoche, as best supporting actress.</P>
<P> Cruise and Fiennes were joined in the best actor category by
Woody Harrelson for ``The People vs. Larry Flynt,'' Geoffrey
Rush for ``Shine'' and Billy Bob Thornton for ``Sling Blade.''</P>
<P> Along with Scott Thomas, the best actress nominees were
Brenda Blethyn (''Secrets &amp; Lies''), Frances McDormand
(''Fargo''), Emily Watson (''Breaking the Waves'') and Diane
Keaton (''Marvin's Room'').</P>
