<P> MILPITAS, Calif. (Reuter) - Attention, corporate Web surfers
-- LittleBrother may be watching you.</P>
<P> Kansmen Corp. has unveiled the latest version of its
LittleBrother software, which enables companies to monitor
employee use of the Internet and the Internet-like computer
networks known as intranets -- and can even block worker access
to certain Web sites.</P>
<P> ``LittleBrother is not a censorship tool -- it is a business
productivity tool,'' Kan Ng, president of the Milpitas,
Calif.-based company, said in a statement Monday.</P>
<P> ``Employees should not make excessive personal long-distance
calls or take office supplies for personal use because it wastes
company time and money,'' Ng said. ``In the same sense,
employees should not waste company time and money at
unproductive Internet sites.''</P>
<P> The Internet is a vast treasurehouse of information, such as
corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission or
constantly updated satellite weather maps.</P>
<P> But the Net also has destinations many bosses might frown
on, such as the Dilbert cartoon site (''It's better than
working'') or Playboy magazine's cyberspace counterpart.</P>
<P> The version of LittleBrother version 1.2 released Monday
comes in two varieties: a $295 product that tracks and analyzes
computer network use and a $495 LittleBrother Professional
Edition that also blocks access to certain Internet sites.</P>
<P> The software, first released in December, can identify who
uses the Internet, where they go and how long they stay;
identify who is downloading material unrelated to work and
finger people playing network games or using chat rooms, Kansmen
said.</P>
<P> The higher-priced software includes a list of blocked sites
in categories like pornography and game-playing, and companies
can create their own lists of banned sites, the private company
said.</P>
<P> But LittleBrother isn't a total drag on the fun-loving
corporate Web-head. The software can be configured to allow full
Web access before work hours, during lunch and after work.</P>
