WASHINGTON (Reuter) - The Agriculture Department is
proposing to lift bans on imports of a variety of fruits and
vegetables, ranging from dill from Guatemala to leeks from the
Netherlands.

``Lifting these restrictions would provide the United States
with additional varieties and sources of fruits and vegetables
without the threat of introducing any injurious plant pests,''
said Alfred Elder, a top official at the Agriculture
Department's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

The Agriculture Department is slated to publish a proposed
rule in the Federal Register March 25 and said comments would be
due by May 27.

The department seeks to allow imports of radicchio from
Ecuador, eggplant from El Salvador, basil and dill from
Guatemala, above ground parts of mioga ginger from Japan, and
eggplant and radicchio from Nicaragua.

The proposed rule would also allow imports of papayas from
Brazil, leeks from Belgium and the Netherlands and garlic from
Romania under special conditions.

It said other proposed regulatory changes include declaring
all Chilean provinces free of the Mediterranean fruit fly and
extending the production area in Arava, Israel,
from where peppers may be grown for import to the United States.
