DALLAS (UPI) -- The Dallas Mavericks traded veteran point guard Derek
Harper to the New York Knicks Thursday for forward Tony Campbell.
The deal between the clubs also included and a first-round draft pick
in 1997.
``The addition of Derek Harper to our backcourt had become a
neccessity because of injuries,'' said Knicks General Manager Ernie
Grunfield. ``He is a proven veteran. He will give us leadership and
savvy and he is an outstanding outside shooter.
Harper, 32, has averaged 11.6 points and 3.5 assists a game this
season. The 31-year-old Campbell averaged 7.1 points and 2.7 rebounds as
a guard-forward for the Knicks this year.
Harper was a first round draft pick in 1983 after playing his college
ball at Illnois. The Knicks acquired Campbell for the Minnesota
Timberwolves before the 1992 season. The 10-year veteran also played
with Detroit and the Los Angeles Lakers.

DALLAS (UPI) -- The Dallas Mavericks traded veteran point guard Derek
Harper to the New York Knicks Thursday for forward Tony Campbell.
The deal between the clubs also included and a first-round draft pick
in 1997.
The 32-year-old Harper is averaging 11.6 points and 3.5 assists a
game this season. Campbell, a 6-foot-7 swingman who has been a part-time
starter for the Knicks, is averaging 7.1 points and 2.7 rebounds.
Harper was the Mavericks' first round draft and the 11th overall
selection out of Illinois in 1983. He entered the season with an average
of 15.0 points and 5.4 assists a game. Harper and Dallas Coach Quinn
Buckner had been at odds this season.
``Derek requested that we look at the possibility of trading him a
year ago, when we made the decision to go with young players,'' said
Mavericks Vice President of Basketball Operations Rick Sund. ``It had to
be a situation that made sense for us in the future. Of course, he
wanted to go to a contending team, but we couldn't necessarily promise
that. Tony is a proven scorer who can help us, particularly at the small
forward spot. He can play two positions, which gives us flexibility.''
Sund said that if the 1997 first round pick is in the top five
positions, the first selection would be pushed back to the 1998 draft.
Harper goes from a club in last place with a league-worst 2-27 record
to a first-place team with a 19-8 record.
