Yourblog is so inspiring! I've never commented before, but I always look forward to seeing how you use your creative talents to make joyful memories for your family. That last picture of you and Rose is the best!
On another note, I noticed recently that Yankee Candle has a My Favorite Things collection of scents. They're fairly expensive, and I'm not quite sure how, say, "Whiskers on Kittens" transfers into a scent ? but I still think it's a fun idea: -things/favorite-things
Beautiful party! The "Sound of Music" was my guess. My three year old grand daughter Anabelle received a guitar for her birthday in November. Your little Rose is a sweetheart! I wish you lived close by, I would pay you for your beautiful cakes.
Jessica, I have to tell you that some of the moms in my homeschool group wonder whether or not you actually sleep. ; ) We have no idea how you do all of the things you do. You always have the most beautiful, thoughtful posts on your blog of such beautiful life moments. Thank you for sharing them all with us. I know I speak for all of us aforementioned moms that we are truly inspired. Happy Birthday to Rose!
Yes, the oldest two did wear their First Communion Dresses. This is actually the fourth time they were able to wear them this year! First for their First Holy Communions, then Easter, then for our Little Flowers Mother-Daughter Tea Party, and now for this birthday party! I got such a great deal on them to begin with and have definitely gotten plenty of use out of them! I hope you are able to get the stain out of your dress, that would be sweet!
Aw, thanks Barbara! And I made sure to put some lipstick on just for you! You'd never know that I had woken up (after not nearly enough sleep) feeling miserable thanks to a certain something that decided to come back after *almost* a year, right?! ? Thank goodness for coffee and make-up! lol
Thank you Charlotte! And thank you also for letting me bounce ideas off of you as I was planning, and for all of your great suggestions!! Rose LOVED her roses from Daddy, and I think he might have to start bringing the girls flowers (or balloons) on each of their birthdays!! ?
I really didn't know how this was all going to come together, but I finally decided on the theme last month (originally I was going to go with a Woodland Fairy theme, but decided to save that for when she is doing the Alphabet Path in a couple years) and had been watching for little gifts and ways to incorporate the theme for a party! I said it all "fell together" but that was only possible since I had put a little thought into it ahead of time and had some "supplies" to choose from along with the last things I bought at Michaels when Erica and I went to town/Costco.
Fantastic party. I had recently thought about trying to introduce The Sound of Music to my own wee girl and now I definitely will! Love your ideas though my husband doesn't like the amazon transactions on my Visa card! LOL. X
Just checking in after a week long trip to check on the O Antiphon ideas and saw another wonderful idea with your birthday party. Amazingly awesome. Love "stealing" from you! Used the St. Nick's coins idea for our school this year. It went off with a big hit. Next year I plan to use your chocolate Santa turned St. Nick idea (did it for my kids this year as practice). So CUUUUTE!
Wow Jessica! I love the Sounds of Music and your party is amazing! I was wondering when you ever sleep as well! Every detail is so well thought out and planned! I would have trouble just ordering the gifts and special touches! I have four boys and we are waiting for our first baby girl to arrive in March! I hope someday she loves the Sound of Music as much as I do and I can come back and revisit this beautiful birthday party! We shall see! Congratulations on a job so well done and on your beautiful family. Thanks for sharing all that you do. Merry Christmas!

Hello! My husband and I struggled to find a name for our daughter but finally settled on Liesl because of our shared love of musicals. We just decided to do a Sound of Music theme party for her first birthday. You have such wonderful ideas here! And beautiful children. Thanks for posting!!
Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
When I was a kid, my father would put long playing records on the hifi in the hallway outside the bedroom I shared with two sisters. We would listen to Grande Canyon Suite, the Nutcracker, and among others, the Sound of Music. And so we would indeed nod off to the sounds of music.
Eight year back, after decades since I had seen it last, I watched A Sound of Music with my six year old daughter. At first I was uncomfortable. I noticed some judging going on, some mindless mind chatter.
If you are following your heart, you might not be able to fit in either. You might be perceived as a problem by those around you with rigid beliefs. Remember the song, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? The sisters perceived her as a problem in the convent cause she was so un-convent-ional.
Praise the raindrops on roses rather than dwell on what seems to be not working in life. The more I focus on what is working, the more what seems to be not working takes care of itself, through Divine Alchemy and Grace.
If you remember, Captain Von Trapp had silenced the music in his house since he had lost his wife. Maria brought it back, getting the children to sing, and even getting the Captain to strum and join the singing. Music helped melt the pain in his heart and restore happy hearts to everyone. Music builds bridges, melts walls, and connects people who once felt separate.
Brevard audiences are about to be serenaded by the classic melodies of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music," as the Henegar Center presents the beloved musical. The show, as familiar as raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, opens Friday, Jan. 19 for a run through Feb. 11.
While most people need no introduction to the popular musical, the story - based on true events from the memoir of Maria von Trapp, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" - follows Maria, an exuberant young governess who brings music and joy back to the broken von Trapp family as the Nazis gain power in 1938 Austria.
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II adapted the von Trapp family's story into a musical in 1959, and the following year "The Sound of Music" won five Tony Awards. It was then adapted into an Academy Award-winning movie starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in 1965. Since then, it has become a favorite staple of theater stages and living rooms alike.
"The story of 'The Sound of Music' has stood the test of time as it's still relevant in our pop culture and has seen many revivals on Broadway," said Jared Sierra, the Henegar's associate artistic director.
The Henegar Center has assembled a talented cast to tell the story, including two actors sharing the role of Maria, the heart and soul of any "Sound of Music" production. Kayla Canada and Bethany Soule will each put their spin on the iconic character.
"We have an immensely talented cast who have worked with an incredibly gifted production team to bring these characters to life in a way that feels honest to the material and have captured the essence of all the things we love about classic musical theater," Sierra said. "The cast is made up of many Henegar regulars who we love, but also includes a wide array of new faces."
And then, of course, there's the music. "The Sound of Music" boasts a soundtrack that has stood the test of time, featuring familiar favorites like "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss" and "Climb Every Mountain."
But whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the world of musical theater, the Henegar's production promises an evening of heartwarming nostalgia and a reminder that some stories are timeless, no matter how many times you've heard them.
