So we are having this really wonderful talk by Prof. Murat today at 8PM on inferring private information on social networks on the basis of inference attacks on the public data.

In the light of this lecture, and its importance, the session tonight is rescheduled until further notice.

Inferring Private Information on Social Networks

Ever wondered how to launch inference attacks using released Social Networking Data to predict private information?

Attend this talk to learn about algorithms on released data to predict private information.

All,
I need a favor from anyone attending this talk.

In 2 of his papers at WWW (09 & 11), he has used data gathered from ~167k Fb users(trust me, its huge & very very useful) in an attempt to generalize data gathered from social networks and later propose few sanitization techniques to prevent inference attacks. The relevant posters are here and here; they are short versions which were presented as posters at WWW, hence don't expect to gain much insight from them.

Could any one please ask him if he is willing to share this dataset for research purposes? I could email him and ask but i think there are better chances of getting it if any sweet, innocent looking kid from among you guyz ask him to be generous enough. :-)

=====
Sidenote:
  • FYI, WWW is a Tier 1 conference[cite: link] in the field of social media & applications. The papers published here are very interesting to read and **some of them** (a very small fraction) do not look as theoretical (& threatening) as there counterparts at other reputed venues, so you might want to have a look at them.
  • If anyone is interested in related work on modelling large scale information networks, diffusion patterns and their relation to learning algorithms, I would advise you to have a look at Jure's publications. He's now a Prof at Stan and has some amazing publications in related fields.
Cheers,
