I would like to communicate with you about a concern regarding school safety raised through a social media post yesterday. A post was made on a local Facebook forum stating that there is an ongoing threat at Bitney Prep from a student who had made several threats about gun violence at our school. This rumor is not true. We do not have an ongoing situation with a student making threats about gun violence at Bitney Prep. I want to assure you that our students are safe and that we have safety protocols in place at our school to address the kind of incident that was referenced in the post.
The post also accuses the school of not being transparent with the community about this situation. This is also not true. We did have a situation in September 2024 where a student made comments in class referencing gun violence. When this incident was brought to the attention of school staff, it was addressed using school safety protocols. The student was removed from school while the incident was investigated. I worked with school staff and local law enforcement to conduct a threat assessment. No weapon was ever present at school, the student did not have access to guns at home, no specific threat was made, no specific students were targeted, and the behavior was addressed with appropriate consequences. Following the incident I sent an email to Bitney's parents and guardians about the situation and the steps that were taken to address it. I also spoke individually with several parents to address concerns that they had about this incident.
The safety of our students and staff is our first priority at Bitney Prep High School. We are committed to maintaining and following appropriate safety protocols and procedures at school. I have and will always communicate with you about any issues that involve the safety of your students.
Please contact me at school if you have any questions or concerns,
Sincerely,
