what is your purpose of disabling the right click. problem with any technique is that there is always a way to go around them. the console for firefox (firebug) and chrome allow for unbinding of that event. or if you want the image to be protected one could always just take a look at their temporary cache for the images.

Would it be possible to leave the ability to right click and download just when done a separate watermark is placed on the image. Of course this won't prevent screen shots but thought it may be a good middle ground.

A very simple way is to add the image as a background to a DIV then load an empty transparent gif set to the same size as the DIV in the foreground. that keeps the less determined out. They cant get the background without viewing the code and copying the URL and right clicking just downloads the transparent gif.

Hello all! I just wanted to know if it is at all possible to disable right-click / dragging of images usingly only CSS. Sadly I cant code inject as it is in not in my plan.

If anyone knows of a way via css only without code injection, that would be great!

I used Dustin's code on my website, it worked really well to prevent people to save your images, but it has an issue on mobile with 7.0 Forte indexes: it disable arrow's clicking on carousel indexes (both right and left arrow). Do anyone have another solution to disable right click ONLY on images whitout creating any issue on mobile?

I found the original version of that here: -how-can-i-override-the-browsers-right-click-settings/#comment-266794 but it has the problem that it prevents to open links (or anything else) in other panels, copying text etc.

While to block right click image saving on desktop devices, I used this in Advanced > Code injection > Header, that you originally posted on your website -disable-right-click/ and was implemented to avoid image drag as well here: -inject-code-for-blocking-right-click-and-drag-and-save-for-images/#comment-493592

Is there any way to lock down a site so that right clicking on a desktop or touch & hold on a mobile does not result in any kind of context menu? Certainly one that includes the saving of images, the opening of images in another tab or the inspection of elements?

I'm completely new to this CSS code thing and am trying to prevent photos being downloaded from my website. I've figured out how to prevent right-click downloading, but I'm still not clear on preventing it on phones. This "New CSS" given above, where does it go in the code? In the SEO Header or Footer? Or elsewhere in the code found within the Themes. Thanks!

This code prevents right-clicking on a website. It defines the JavaScript method to disable right-click, which generates an alert and returns false. Then it assigns the body element's oncontextmenu property to this function, thereby triggering it whenever the user right-clicks anywhere on the page.

This article describes two approaches for disabling right-click in ASP.NET web pages and images. This is accomplished by using HTML properties such as oncontextmenu and onmousedown, as well as JavaScript's preventDefault() method. The post also describes how to use JavaScript to display an alert when you right-click.

E.g. When viewing a product, there is a large image, and then some thumbnails of the product. When trying to right click on the large image, I want to disable right click, but if they try to right click on the thumbnails, I don't want to have right click disabled.

ps - I fully understand the usability reasons why NOT to disable right-click, but copyright and image theft in Asia is a much larger problem than in North American countries. Plus, this is more for the seller peace-of-mind than actually protecting the content.

If you publish an image on the web there's no foolproof way to prevent somebody from saving a copy. It has to be sent over the wire to be displayed, and a determined user can intercept it with tools like Wireshark or Fiddler or any browser debugging framework such as Firebug, even if you find a way to disable right-click and drag-drop to the desktop.

I am just getting my photography shop together and that's one of the first things I noticed - no right click protection. Yes, they can take a screen shot but that is low res, and nothing we can do to stop that. Not much they can do with it except maybe a desktop wallpaper. However the actual shop photos are high enough res that people can download and use as their own however they wish. Even selling elsewhere. I have a SmugMug photo site as well and that is protected from right clicks, as it should be. I suppose Etsy is more of an arts and crats site so this probably didnt figure in their design. But I see a lot of photo sites now and it needs to be addressed. I suppose I will watermark my images until they address this.

The No Right Click Images Plugin Plugin uses JavaScript to change the right click action on IMG tags to disable the context menu. It disables the context menu on images only so other right click actions, such as links, should work normally.

Some browsers prevent JavaScript from changing the browser context menu and this plugin will not be effective in those cases. At best, this plugin will prevent right clicking or dragging images on some browsers.

If your website features lots of original content like images, you might want to disable right click in WordPress. Since online properties can be stolen with just one click, doing so can prevent content theft.

Not only that but disabling right click can also deter image hotlinking. This occurs when users steal your images and display them on a different website while using your server resources to do so. As a result, hotlinking violates your copyright and places unnecessary strain on your server.

With the WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click plugin, you can disable right click in WordPress and turn off commands like CTRL+C. Since the plugin also disables CTRL+U in Chrome, users are unable to view your page code (which is another way to steal content).

Unfortunately, content theft is pretty common. Even with the best intentions, users can lift images without being aware of the consequences of their actions. However, by disabling right click in WordPress, you can safeguard your content to prevent visitors from using it without permission.

Since you mentioned the Toolbox plugin, though, I thought I would poke around and see if I could get something to work with it. Much to my amazement because this kind of thing is definitely not in my wheelhouse, this workflow on page load appears to disable right-clicking on an image element.

Thanks for the input.
My main concern was hiding the copy option by right clicking on the image as well as hiding image properties.
ASAIK, hotlinking to my images is still possible, the code works well in ie and firefox (opera ignores this).

Just watermark your product images like what pcbob had said.

Whatever javascript implementation to prevent people from right-clicking and saving images won't work. These can be easily disabled.

Hotlinking images also does not prevent people from saving the images into their local disk. If you watermark your images on the center, they will find it hard to remove.

Unless you are using your own product photos, worrying about people right clicking and copying images isn't something I think you need to stress over considering they tend to come from the manufacutre with a open media licence for print and product promotion.

you would be suprised at how many people lack knowledge or ability or both to simply get a screencap

I personally use AndySnap for EVERYTHING. it worksbetter than the 'printscreen'

you have no idea how many models have said to me 'this photographer disabled right click on his website... and im like 'well andy snap it' a month later they still havn't figured out how to do it

so for the sake of annoying annoying models, I'd like to disable it from facebook..

I think I'll become one of those annoying photographers who puts 'COPYRIGHT PROOF ONLY' accross the entire image so you can't even enjoy looking at the photo!

but i don't even look in ports with that stuff .. i find it offputting

Consider that in order for your browser to display an image, it must be able to store it and decode it in a form that the browser can understand.

This means that somewhere on every system, there is an image file that is totally unprotected by web page code or encryption.

Find the temp folder for the browser and your set to do a quick copy at the best resolution down loaded. P.S. A quick screen capture may not be full res

You can forget about screen captures and right click disable, any image is left vulnerable in this form.

I am researching a similar solution to this problem .
This script is very useful, but does not solve my problem.
I want to block the right click within the video preview pluggin (the html one, not the quicktime).
Student at this time can right click and 'download file as' the video.

After working hard on a design, image or article you may want to protect it by using a JavaScript that disables right-click while optionally warning a visitor that the content is copyrighted.
