Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get our BitCurator machine up to date after running an old version for awhile. I was able to get v.4.3.3 installed with the SALT repository with "sudo bitcurator install", which is awesome, but I'm trying to get it set up with multiple user accounts.

If I sign into other users, I still get the default Ubuntu setup without the Applications menu. Commands like "ddrescue" only run under the user that ran the install command. Installing under another user with "sudo bitcurator install" or "sudo bitcurator install --user person" returns "bitcurator is already installed." Is there a good way to install bitcurator across multiple users?

I also don't see the BitCurator Disk Image Access Tool that was in previous versions. Is that no longer supported? It looks like the BitCurator Reporting Tool had similar functionality at some point. I know this all is a lot to maintain, so it would be understandable to drop if TestDisk and more complex workflows are usually needed, but I don't see anything documented where I would expect. We're trying to have grad students image external media, so I'm trying to lower the bar as much as possible for them.

Thanks!
Greg

Hi Gregory,

When developing the newest release of BitCurator, we hadn't specifically taken into account that it would need to be installed for multiple users, but instead installed for a primary account used by multiple people. I'm going to take another look at the installer to see if we can determine a means by which it can be installed for multiple users.

Adding a note - yes, both the BitCurator Disk Image Access tool and the BitCurator Reporting Tool were retired last year. The Brunnhilde and Brunnhilde GUI tools included with the current versions of the environment provide some overlap in reporting and image inspection functionality.

Reviving an old thread; was there any progress in getting a multiuser environment working?

Is there anything installed in directories other than the install-user's home directory which is tied to the install-user?
i.e. could I use a pared down version of the install-user's home directory as /etc/skel/ for newly created users and have them use the Bitcurator tools the same?
I'm happy to do some experimenting; is there something that should absolutely fail for a user other than the install-user, which I could use as a control while testing?

Hi David,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Have you tried the most recent version of BitCurator to see what applications or configurations might be missing for you? It may be possible to get this up and running, but any feedback you can provide about what might be missing for the added users would be useful.
Otherwise, everything is installed and configured for all users and put in /usr/local/bin.
