I have had some trouble recently exporting files from an E01 disk image with BitCurator. The Disk Image Access tool will not export any files, although it sees 2 volumes, both FAT12. I can use Nautilus to mount the disk image and view the files but when I try to copy them to another location, the files appear to be copied...but when I take a closer look, none of the files hold any data (in properties 0 bytes). When I use grsync, I get an error 23 and when using rsync on the command line, I receive "input/output error". FTK Imager will not export these files either and says "unrecognized file system."

Any recommendations as to what I should try next?

Best,
Abby

I'm not sure if this is very helpful information, but I also had trouble with viewing/exporting files from an E01 disk image with BitCurator recently.  I could load the image, but the tool did not 'open' the image.  I could not see anything that was on it and therefore couldn't export anything.  The disk itself did have some corrupted sectors.  I figured that might have something to do with it however using a different program outside of Bit Curator, I was able to export the files.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the reply. I can actually mount the disk image and browse the files in BitCurator...but I can't copy them or extract them from the image for some reason. What program did you use outside of BitCurator? I tried FTK Imager but that did not work, either.

Thanks,
Abby

Because we have other unsolved issues with BitCurator and creating disk images is not part of our standard workflow we looked outside of BC and ended up purchasing IsoBuster.  It is a single user/single computer license.  In this instance it was very easy to load the disk image and export the files.  I haven't tried to use the program to create a disk image yet.

On the program itself, one thing we have learned is that you need to be an administrator in order to view hard drives and USB flash drives; non-administrators can only view the optical drive.  This is something we need to address as it is a shared computer on which none of us have admin rights.

Thanks,
Carol

Abby,  you could export the raw disk image from the E01 file and see if you get better results. You can use the ewfexport utility from the command line to do so. Here's a link describing the command usage in detail: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/wily/man1/ewfexport.1.html

But in a nutshell, it's just: ewfexport [file name]. After that you'll be given a series of prompts. Enter the new file name (without extension) and then the default on the rest of the prompts should work.

Best,
Porter
