depends a lot on what hardware platform to take, but i have little exp
with FreeRTOS and bare code on ARM7, also happen to have few arm7
cards lying around
but i will not touch arm assembly ever again even if you put a knife
on my throat

iMHO basing off existing cards that can be had cheaply is important,
also IMHO long as the interface exposed is open and available freely
so it can be implemented anywhere that is good enough; it has the
upside of keeping you from assembly ;)
