Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 1999 3:26 PM

Subject: The latest document on the NCREL web site

While technology "on its own" may not improve student achievement, research
is helping us understand how technology creates circumstances and
opportunities under which there is a positive effect on student
achievement. Pathways to School Improvement's latest paper "Critical
Issue: Using Technology to Improve Student Achievement" discusses advances
in measuring technology's impact and helps educators understand how to make
technology decisions that may improve student learning. The Pathways
document is at:
http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te800.htm

This latest document on the NCREL web site is based on a paper written by
Margaret Honey, Katherine McMillan Culp, and Robert Spielvogel from the
Center for Children and Technology, a division of the Educational
Development Corporation.

Pathways to School Improvement provides ORIGINAL essays which review
research and provide practical action steps for schools. Pathways has been
heralded as a real timesaver in making decisions about teaching and
learning.

If you haven't already done so, we encourage you to check out the newest
section of the Spk2wrt Web site, the "Resource Lab," where you can access
a broad range of resources pertaining to speech recognition technology.
The URL is: http://www.edc.org/spk2wrt/lab.html

The materials were developed based on clinical experience and knowledge
gained through the Speaking to Write project. The resources are
continually in development; we therefore hope you'll check them out, use
them, and then come back and give us your honest feedback. Our goal is to
continually improve these resources, so we need your feedback!

Resources under the following broad topics include:

--General information resources
--Discrete speech and DragonDictate resources
--Continuous speech and Dragon's NaturallySpeaking resources

In addition to the resources currently contained within the Resource Lab,
we
will be continually adding to these resources. We'll keep you posted as
resources are added to the Web site.

Thanks.

Full Project Description:
Our school-wide social studies theme this year focuses on the study of
Asia. We would like to communicate with a number of different Asian
schools in a structured exchange of information that would allow us to
better understand the similarities and differences between and among
countries. During each month of the project, a worksheet will be available
to be completed by all participating schools. We will compile and compare
the information and make it available to all.

Objectives:
We strongly believe that awareness leads to greater tolerance. Also,
students will work on lanuguage, social studies, science and math skills,
all within the framework of a project that is exciting for them.
