MATH TRICKS FOR YOUR DIGITS

Today we're keeping it simple, as we work to compile a listing of those
wonderful math tricks we all learned with, and now teach. Those pesky nines
in multiplication seem to be a real problem for many, and you must check
out the finger trick for multiplying by 6, 7, 8 and 9. Take notes as you go
- you'll want to remember these tricks the next time you need them. We also
welcome your tricks, so be sure to send us an email if we've missed one you
grew up with. It's all at the site: http://www.teachnet.com.

Project Information
-------------------
Project Title: Project Worldsong

Project Begin & End Dates: 9/01/99 to 5/30/00

Project Summary:
Involves elementary schools in a nationwide partnership and exchange of
multicultural music information. Students will exchange writings, photos
and cassette recordings of multicultural music of their areas throughout
the school year with other schools through the US Mail and through the
Riverview web site. Each participating school receives a free book and
instrument.
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: Arts

Technologies Used: Email

Project Sponsor: Northern Life Unsung Heroes of American Education

Full Project Description:
Once a month, Riverview will send a "Mystery Music Pak" to one of the
participating schools. Enclosed in the Pak will be a multicultural music
book, a musical instrument from a major world culture, blank cassette
tapes, postage-paid envelopes, a check to cover film developing, disposable
camera(s) with film, photos of musicians of the cultures of Riverview
students, a cassette tape of music of the cultures of Riverview students
and a journaling assignment. The participating school is to discover the
identity of the cultures at Riverview and e-mail the answers to Riverview.
The participating school also takes photos and records music of its
cultures and sends them to Riverview and to the other participating
schools. That way, each school will be involved every month during the
school year. All photos and correct identifying answers will be displayed
on the Riverview web site along with links to web sites of the
participating schools. At the end of the project, schools will be asked to
fill out a questionnaire

Objectives:
1.Increase students' self esteem and classroom achievement by developing a
positive cultural image of themselves and those around them.
2. Increase motivation by providing arts activities that reach all types of
learners.
3. Expand students' knowledge of, and interaction in the arts by making the
arts accessible to minority students and students of low socioeconomic
status.
4. Decrease racial isolation at school and in the community by increasing
cultural appreciation and understanding.
5. Expand students' knowledge of community and nation through interaction
with elementary students and faculty throughout the US.

INTERNET SOCIETY CALL for ThinkQuest 1999 JUDGES

ThinkQuest Internet Challenge* is an International web-based
contest that offers an opportunity for students 12 through 19
years old to learn about the Internet, to work with other
students, and to create exciting tools and materials that will
help educate others in the "Internet Style" of learning.

To become involved in this important and exciting competition,
The Internet Society is seeking individuals to serve as Judges.
Candidates must have experience with web-based learning and
subject matter expertise in one of the following categories: math
and science, arts and literature, sports and health, social
sciences, and interdisciplinary topics.

Since its beginning in 1996, ThinkQuest has energized the
intellectual power of students around the world to:

· Improve the quality of educational tools and materials available on the
Internet

· Encourage students to build exciting and innovative educational tools
and materials that demonstrate and enrich the "Internet Style" of learning

· Use the Internet to create collaboration among students from different
countries and schools that have different levels of technology

Equally important, students will be experiencing an entirely new
way of learning through the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge.
Through "Internet Style" learning--emphasizing exploration and
collaboration--kids are able to utilize the vast amount of
information available on the World Wide Web to make their
favorite subjects more exciting, both for themselves and for
other students.

To help them continue their education beyond high school,
ThinkQuest is granting scholarship awards for students and cash
awards for their coaches and schools. Students can win up to
$25,000 in scholarships and teachers and coaches can win up to
$5,000 (with an additional $5,000 provided to support their
school or institution).

IMPORTANT DATES:

· Thursday, August 19, 1999 Judging begins
· Tuesday, September 5, 1999 Level I Judging completed

Judges should be prepared to review a minimum of 15-18 Web sites
within a two-week period.

REQUIREMENTS:

· Netscape 3.0, Internet Explorer 3.0 or a similar product
· Appropriate modem capabilities (a minimum speed of 33.6Kbps is mandatory)
· Working knowledge of the Web, including experience downloading and
installing plug-ins
· Ability to judge each site impartially for its educational value

The judging process takes place online via a web-based judging
system and panelists should expect to spend an average of one
hour on each site; an honorarium will be provided.

If you are interested in participating or would like more
information about the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, please
complete the application at:

a judge, please forward this information to their attention.

Thank you in advanced for your time and consideration; I look
forward to hearing from you soon.

Sent: Saturday, July 10, 1999 12:46 PM
From: nikst [mailto:ni...@orc.ru]

Year 2000 Problem: Y2K Media Watch
http://ojr.usc.edu/sections/y2k/

Year 2000 Problem: Y2K Media Watch - ongoing analysis of how the media is
covering the Y2K crisis -- from hype to hysteria.

The Year 2000 computer crisis, known variously as Y2K or the Millennium
Bug,
presents a curious problem for the media. Will Y2K prove a minor technical
glitch, easily solvable by existing programming expertise, as some experts
claim? How should we respond to predictions, made by other experts, of vast
disruptions in social services, transportation, utilities and finance?
Given the fact that experts well versed in the technical aspects of this
problem differ drastically in their projections of its consequences, how
should reporters cover the story? Does the media have a responsibility to
report on the views of those who take an alarmist view of the problem? How
will journalists respond to the ethical dilemma of covering a story in
which
public perception of the problem (formed largely by the media coverage)
may actually contribute to its severity?

The Y2K Media Watch Project does not take a position on the technical
aspects of the "millennium bug." We do not claim to either predict or
report
on the actual consequences of computer systems failing to recognize dates
beyond January 1, 2000. Our concern is with the social aspects of this
problem: the way that media coverage affects people's beliefs and opinions
about what will happen, and the way that these beliefs and opinions may
contribute to undesirable effects ranging from willful ignorance to
widespread panic.

We will examine and comment critically on the coverage of the story by
mainstream media; we will also observe more obscure channels of
communication that appeal to subcultures but may yet have an impact upon
society at large. We want to see who is saying what about what will happen
in the year 2000, and how debates and conflicts among Y2K experts are
presented and perceived by journalists and the public. Our hope is that
this
Web site will contribute to improvement of both journalistic coverage of
the
problem and realistic public discussion of its solutions.

We intend to update this material as much as possible thorugh the first
quarter of the next year. We will also be adding more sector reports over
the summer, for a total of nine. Y2K sites have been linked from within the
sector reports, but we also provide a list of links, with content
descriptions, at the end of each. If you find other links on a specific
topic that you think will be useful to others, please e-mail us and we will
add it to the list.
