We need YOU! We are currently soliciting fresh ideas, innovative web
activities, and new project proposals for MidLink Magazine's 6th year
on-line. This year, in addition to pointing web travelers to your site to
view student work, we would like to highlight your handouts, web sites, or
lesson plans that would show other teachers how to replicate your project
in their own classrooms.

If you have a project idea that would have a wide appeal for teachers and
students age 8 - 18, please contact me immediately. For items included in
the MidLink Call for Articles, we will need:

1. A brief paragraph describing your classroom project, your learning
goals, and the academic discipline(s) and objectives you will address
2. A general idea of when you will have student work on the web to serve as
an example. (See last year's call at:
http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/fall98/call.html
<http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/fall98/call.html> )

In order to help teachers plan to include your project in the coming school
year, we would like to post the Call for Articles by July 19. NOTE:
Teachers are invited to use their participation in MidLink as documentation
for Instructional Technology Credits, ancillary materials for classroom
activities, or evidence of professional growth. Participating schools will
receive an Award GIF to display on their school web page.

The mission of MidLink Magazine, the award-winning
<http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~MidLink/honors.html> digital magazine, is to
highlight exemplary work from the most creative classrooms around the
globe. We are a non-profit organization, supported by SAS inSchool
<http://www.sasinschool.com> , North Carolina State University
<http://www.ncsu.edu/cep/> , and the University of Central Florida
<http://www.cs.ucf.edu> . Any school, teacher, or student is invited to
participate. (See Submission Guidelines <mail.inst.html> .)

All content must be original, must enhance learning, and must come directly
from a classroom. Our pages reflect the creative learning process that
exists in classrooms where technology is the vehicle or enhancement, but
academics are the focus. (NOTE: We do not include projects that charge a
fee for participation.)

Hi Gang,

Last year a few of us here at Southern Regional participated in a
one-on-one email program with 5th grade students in Arizona. It was the
best managed project of its type I have come across. Adult mentors are
hooked up with 5th grade students and participate in a series of structured
and casual email exchanges funneled through the students' teachers.

The program is curriculum based and requires about one "assignment"
messages a week, with occassional casual correspondence. Each week there
is a specific assignment students will be working on in class and a guided
correspondence based on that assignment. Last year some of the "assignemnt"
messages were on the following topics.

What is a hero. Who is your hero and why?
The Millenium Bug. Where would you want to be on New Year's Eve?
Peach Building and Acts of Kindness
Favorite Animals or Pets
Antonym Game
Make believe you are someone else
Here comes the Judge
Finding little words in bigger words
Compound words

Participation lasts 1/2 of the school year. Two sessions are run each year.
I participated for the whole year and it's tough to say who learned more,
me or my 5th grade cyberpal.

Mentors will receive guidelines and instructions before the program begins
in September or October (date to be set by teachers involved). For the next
session, they need about 10 more adults.

If you have thought about doing anything like this with your students, I
can't think of a better learning experience than this. If you want to reap
the rewards associated with mentoring a student on-line, this program will
provide you with seeds. You can sow them, nurture them, and harvest the
crop.

If you are interested in participating, please drop a line to Barbara Soto
at msp...@azstarnet.com and tell her I sent you. ;->

Thanks,
Art

NAACP, AT&T TO CREATE TECH CENTERS
Issue: Minorities/Access
The NAACP has announced a partnership with AT&T to create technology
centers
that provide training and access to computers and the Internet in 20 cities
around the country. "The technological segregation known as the digital
divide must be narrowed,'' NAACP President Kweisi Mfume said Monday. Last
week, the National Urban League and Ameritech announced they would spend
$350,000 to build five new community technology centers in Aurora, IL,
Cleveland, Detroit,Indianapolis, and Milwaukee. The announcement of these
initiatives comes on the heels of a Commerce Department report which found
a
persistent disparity in computer ownership and online access between whites
and black and Hispanic Americans. About 47 percent of all whites own
computers, but fewer than half as many blacks do. The Commerce study also
found that technology gap continues to grow despite plunging computer
prices.

FOCUS SHIFTS TO EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
Issue: EdTech

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, over 350 state education officials
gathered
in Washington (DC) to discuss the effectiveness of educational technology.
The
U.S. Department of Education led the two day conference, "Evaluating the
Effectiveness of Education Technology," which was sponsored by computer and
telecommunications companies including Apple, Gateway and the AT&T
Foundation.
Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley cautioned educators that they
"must not assume that everything that employs technology is going to be
successful. That is why evaluation is so important." Many state education
officials are under increasing pressure from state legislators to produce
evidence that funding for education technology is money well spent. While
the
states have footed much of the bill to wire schools and classrooms, only
West
Virginia has completed a detailed study of the effects of technology on
learning.
