Exactly when is this practice of driving through the heavy rain
and large hail to reach a tornado actually worth the risk? According to
the chaser pages, you should never core punch, because of the driving
hazards, the risk of having a hole punched in you, the poor
visibility that prevents escaping or observing the tornado, and the risk
of driving directly into the tornado.
Yet, one group of VORTEX members punched a core last April, and
one of the classic tornado videos features a tornado racing across the
road just as the observer emerges from the rain. What gives?

Jason,

Please see my response to your inquiries about core punching and VORTEX
posted on WX-TALK. I just got Netscape and was not yet able to post
to WX-CHASE concurrently. Anyway, it talks about what happened at Allison
and how we were NOT "core punching." Please respond if you have more
questions or comments.

Thanks
