[Sigh. Tardy as usual.]
6. Principle of Diminishing Marginal Utility (John Wm.)
Gee, imagine my surprise to find that something I've been using all
my life has been discredited! Are they (professional economists - that's
someone good with numbers but without the personality to be a CPA - 8-> )
calling it something else? Cost/Benefit Ratio, or somesuch? I call it the
"It Ain't Worth It" theory; I'd rather have the $$$ than the item. There
are things I'd LIKE to have but cannot afford, and things that with my
[limited!] discretionary income I CAN afford but have no use for. There was
no way I would pay $600+ for a VCR or microwave, but when the price fell to
$150 I bought. "I'm not an economist, but I play one on television."
10. "Hooray for Captain Spaulding" (John Wm.)
Song sung by Groucho Marx in the film "Animal Crackers", and subse-
quently his theme song.
Hooray for Captain Spaulding,
the African explorer!
"Did someone call me schnorrer?"
Hooray, hooray, hooray!
He just came from the jungle
where all the monkeys throw nuts.
"If I stay here I'll go nuts!"
Hooray, hooray, hooray!
11. "Dirty Gertie" (John Wm.)
I don't remember what this was in relation to! There were a series of
independent films made during the 30's and 40's with all-black casts and a
more overtly sexual theme that were referred to generically as "Dirtie Gertie"
films. Perhaps that was it. Or was it the WWII doggerel,
Dirty Gertie from Bizerte,
kept a mousetrap up her skirtie -
baited it with fleur de flirty...
I mercifully forget the rest! and as for
16. Jim Jones Kool-Aid (Anne Hr.)
The name of the California congressman was Leo Ryan, who died along
with three reporters and one fleeing cult member. Shot to death, while
the other 900+ and the "good" reverend drank the Kool-Aid (grape).
No postings since this AM here in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, so I guess
I'll go watch "From Russia With Love" and wonder how the country music thread
is doing!
