Hello VSE-L

Is it legal to rename a compressed cluster?

The VSAM COMMANDS manual says that you can. ALTER NEWNAME works on anything
except changing the name of a catalog.

Hello Stephen,

Actually, you can't per level 2.  Seems that the CCDS uses the catalog name and the file name to build the record in the CCDS during the define.

We did get this during the cluster rename

F8 0008 *  STEP 001  (IDCAMS)  RENAME EXISTING HBO.BATCH.YAAPMMD       12:52:42

F8 0008 4A91I COMPRESSION CONTROL SERVICE FAILED, REASON=018           12:52:44

A VSAM REQUEST AGAINST THE CCDS FAILED                   12:52:44

A INSERT   REQUEST FAILED WITH RPL FDBK CODE X'080008'   12:52:44

              DETECTION POINT=IKQCCRQD11                               12:52:44

The Data and index went fine.

Now I have been thinking that 1) define file1 with compression, 2) rename file1 to file3, and 3) rename file2 to file1.   That would give me the backup file I am attempting to make.

I hope this makes sense.

What level of VSE are you running?
What commands are you using?

If you are using legal commands and they are not performing according to the
documentation then an APAR needs to be opened and the problem fixed. If you are
running a supported level of VSE.

Hello Stephen,

I had a great explanation why the rename of the compressed
cluster should not work. Then I blew that away bcause you are right.
There is no good reason why the CCDS should not be able to be updated
during the cluster rename.

I will start the PMR going.

Thanks.
