Several weeks ago I sent a brief description of our new school that we are
opening in Hermosillo, Mexico. We still call it the New School for want of
a better name. We are looking for students, including international
students. Briefly,

The only resources a student really need is to get here.

Our tuition is $200 pesos a month (about 25 dollars). Our parent
corporation has offered scholarships for the first generation of students.
So that amount will be waved.

A shared dorm room and 3 meals a day is also $200 pesos a month. We can
wave that if the student really cannot pay. Dorm stduents must be 16 years
or older. Dorms space is limited at present but we have access to other
accomodations at about the same cost.

Students must spend 10.5 hours a day Monday through Friday and five hours
each weekend in school related work. We do not have long Christmas
vacations, Spring breaks etc.

Of the 10.5 hours a day, two are dedicated to studying for an appropriate,
accredited open or distance education program. The students must pay the
fees etc. for this. Mexico has open programs for primary, junior high and
high schools. There are several virtual high schools on the Internet. We
are developing our own professional or college level program for stduents
who have completed high school.

Two hours are devoted to our own special classes that are practical
real-life classes. As the stduent progreses, these classes become related
directly to the chosen specialty or vocation.

One and one half hours are devoted to lunch, recreation, social activity,
student government, special visitors etc. The food service is a
cooperative. Students prepare the food. The cafeteria and fast food
services are businesses and will be open to the public.

Five hours are devoted to work. That is a total of twenty five hours a
week. The work pays for the school. Students may work an additional twenty
hours a week for pay. (Each can earn about 70 dollars a month for spending)
First year stduents are generalists. Second year students are more focused
and technical. Third year students are specialists. Fourth year students
are teachers, manage school businesses, or supervise larger projects. Fifth
year students run their own businesses, financed by the school. We call
them stduents. They could as easily be called employees of the school.

The school does train people to work. Students may leave after one. two or
three years and become good salaried emplyees. But the real objective is
independence not simply grinding out salaried workers. Our hope is that a
plumber will open his or her own business, that may include a plumbing
specialty store.

We emphasize conservation, safety, appropriate technology and the work
ethic. Students get 90 days to prove they want to be with us. At the end of
90 days, academic progress, work effort, attitude etc. will be reviewed.
Students who do not comply with our standards will leave. We cannot afford
them.

We are not a cult, a religion, or an example of anybodies special academic
theory. The New School is here to provide opportunities for any student who
is willing to work hard and sacrifice for a few years in order to become a
self sustaining, independent person.

Our first program (change all the above are's to will's) will start July 15
but we are not tied to a traditional school calendar. The New School is a
business that generates trained, educated people and businesses. It will be
operating in one form or another 365 days a year and sometimes all night.
So will the students.

Hemosillo is gowing and changing fast There are many opportunities to be
creative. Small, independent businesses are the core of the Mexican
economy .Many people think they must be retained and supported for the best
future of Mexico. We agree.

If you know a student who might benefit from this opportunity, please
contact me by email for further infromation from us both. Spanish is
helpful but not necessary. The work ethic is necessary.
