On Monday, April 27th, the new minister of the First Parish Church of
Dorchester, MA, Rev. Shuma Chakravarty will hold a discussion on the life
and work of Olympia Brown --the first woman minister in the US. Brown was a
Universalist contemporary of Emerson and Thoreau. She led the way
concerning women's rights and, at age 85, Nov 2nd, 1920, cast her ballot in
the first election wherein women had the right to vote . She was the only
one of the original suffragists who lived to see their work come to
fruition. She was also a strong advocate for World Peace. Check this
web-site -- http://www.plgrm.com/womens_history/B/Olympia_Brown.shtml

Shuma is working on a book about Olympia Brown under the auspices of the
Five College Women's Studies Research Center. The event will take place at
the Emily Dickens on House, Mount Holyoke College at 4:30 PM. Call
