I think that you misunderstood me, or mis translated my english into your
language (slavic?). I personally have noticed that a lot of male artists seem
to have been obsessed with a particular woman, and use that womans likeness
over and over in their artwork. As for female artists, I don't know of any
that showed an obsession with a man, actually, I don't know of too many
female artists to begin with!! I honestly can not think of even ONE famous
female artist- but I am a layperson (novice) as for art, and I never studied
art...

I apologize for this "non travel" subject...if anyone wishes to e mail me
privately at shosh...@aol.com, I will be more than happy to discuss any art
type topic.

Dear Robin (and all others interested),
It is frequently pointed out that there have not been many famous
women artists. This is due, in large part, to the fact that the
majority of published art historians are men. This is a statement of
fact, not an attack on male art historians (as I am one, just having
completed a B.A. and about to commence an M.A. in Art History).
I am most happy to give examples of famous women artists:
Judith Leyster - Dutch 17th c. portrait painter (married to less
famous artist!)
Rachel Ruysch - Dutch 17th c. flower/still-life painter
Artemisia Gentilleschi - Italian 17th c. allegory/history painter
(daughter of Orazio Gentilleschi)
Elizabeth Vigee-Lebrun - French 18th c. portrait painter (daughter of
Charles Lebrun)
Berthe Morrisot - French 19th c. painter (Impressionist)
Mary Cassatt - American 19th c. painter (Impressionist)
Suzanne Valadon - French 19th c. painter (mistress/wife of Renoir)
Sonya Delaunay-Turk - French early 20th c. French painter and
decorative artist (Robert Delaunay's wife)
Agnes Martin - American 20th c. Minimalist artist
Louise Nevelson - American 20th c. sculptor
Lee Krazner - American 20th c. painter and decorative artist (Jackson
Pollock's wife)
Elaine de Kooning - American 20th c. painter (Willem de Kooning's
wife)
Judy Pfaff - American 20th c. installation artist
Judy Chicago - American 20th c. installation artist
Barbara Hepworth - British 20th c. sculptor
Emily Carr - Canadian 20th c. painter ('member' of Group of Seven)
Freida Kahlo - Mexican early 20th c. Surrealist painter (wife of Diego
Rivera)
Alexandra Luke - Canadian 20th c. painter (member of Painters Eleven)
Helen Frakenthaler - American 20th c. painter
The list can go on and on to include Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holtzer,
Vera Frenkl, Jullian Schnabel and more. Though not many women artists
before the 20th century have been as documented as their male
counterparts, they did live and work successfully. Certainly in the
present day, there are many artists of both sexes who have continued
to produce works on a steady basis. All you need is enthusiasm and
the patience to look!
