I am planning a trip to Tanzania this autumn and hope to spend one week on
safari followed by a trek up Mt. Killimanjaro. I have heard some horror stories
about the effects of altitude on those who attempt to climb this mountain in
just a few days (it is over 19,000 ft high!), due to a lack of proper
acclimatisation. The holiday would however involve spending a couple of
nights on the rim of the Ngorongo crater at ~7000 ft, immediately followed by
two night at the Mt Meru hotel in Arusha. What I would really appreciate
is advice from anybody who has followed a similar itinerary; in particular
how high is the Mt. Meru hotel, and will a stay here help with acclimatisation
and increase the chances of reaching the summit of killimanjaro later in the
week ?
Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi Gary!
Hope you're doing great! I understand how much exciting it may be for you to visit Tanzania and spend a couple of nights in Mt Meru hotel, but I think the most exciting part of it all is the safari trip to Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Tarangire parks, even though there're other parks such as Lake Manyara and so on. However I had a great experience and reason why I am still in Tanzania. I used Meru Treks, a tour operator in Tanzania that was really wonderful to me after the first one failed me. So tell me, have you choosed a tour company yet? If not brother, I'll advice you to go with Meru Treks for they organize good budget tours and even offer a free night accommodation after the trip with bed and breakfast and I think from there, you could visit and spend your night at Mt Meru Hotel :). I had a great safari with this companynand trust me when I say a great safari trip, you doubt, try then. Just like the Chinese proverb that says; Don't listen to what they say, go see.
Have a nice trip to Tanzania whenever you decide to make the trip
