I have never heard that fresh pineapple and grapefruit were unhealthy
for tx. patients on cyclosporine. However, after tx., when I was on
the liquid cyclosporine for about 1 1/2 years, I was told to not mix
the cyclo. with grapefruit juice. I was told to choose milk, oj, or
chocolate milk and stick with that choice. (I, the chocoholic, chose
the latter, and now cannot even bring myself to taste chocolate milk
anymore.) I did have some interesting experiements, like when I was
in an Indian restaurant at med time and had to squirt my cyclo into
something like guava (???) juice. I'd rather not think about how
that messed up my cyclosporine level for that evening.

Take care,

Can we agree....

Taking your medication with a mixture of everyday thought-of liquids will not
harm us??? please?

I take liquid Neoral and have since xp.... and was given.. in hospital...
ANYTHING to wash it down (yeck... you bet!). I especially appreciate the fella
that had his cyclo drop chocolate (the 4th food group) off his dining table
:o). This INCLUDES grapefruit juice... grape juice... apple juice... milk....
water.... orange juice.... the "dreaded" ginger ale.... et. nausium. I frown at
ginger ale... because that was the only carbonated soft drink available on the
ICU ward in the evenings... and I've grown to not like it much...not related
to the cyclo.

The key here might be.... nothing to excess. I know of one case of a guy that
went on a grapefruit only 'diet'...... and ended up in the hospital with severe
gastric problems. I submit for anyone's qualified judgment... "With
moderation.... 'normal' stuff' isn't gonna hurt you". I'd ask the doctors to
make a list of offensive foods... including their offensive 'measure' of
toxicity.

BTW: in keeping within the subject... "such".... I especially take issue with
someone (name withheld) that popped into my mailbox and spoke 'cranberries' and
'didn't he read somewhere that this was bad for a transplant patient?'
WHEN?..... Thanksgiving day 1996... just before I go to the table!!????? In my
opinion this behavior is akin to a child running into a burn ward and yelling
"fire"..(a prank??).. (expletive deleted)!!!
I ate my carnberries.... with thoughts of other uses for them :o)

I was at the nephrologist yesterday and he had an article posted on the
bulleting board in the treatment room about not taking cyclo with grapefruit
juice. Maybe you should check with YOUR doctor since there are a few
conflicting opinions here on the list. I take mine with water (capsules) so
I really never worried about it, but there must be something to it!!
