The card retails for around $595.00. We have used and tested the card
extensively. The card is sufficient for most capture needs. I like the
real-time capture and playback capabilities. As you may know many capture
cards require post-processing to save the digital data to disk.

The following is the press release:

Hope this is useful

INTEL UNVEILS FIRST RETAIL PC BOARD FOR SINGLE-STEP VIDEO RECORDING

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 30, 1993 -- Intel Corporation today introduced
the first retail PC add-in board to capture and compress Indeo video in a
single step. The Intel Smart Video Recorder allows Windows* users to record
motion video from a video camera, video cassette recorder, or laserdisc
player; capturing and compressing the video in a single step and storing it
directly on the PC's hard disk. With the Intel Smart Video Recorder,
users create video for a variety of business applications, including
video-enhanced business presentations, remote service and training,
video databases and video electronic mail. By capturing and compressing
the video simultaneously, the Intel Smart Video Recorder uses less time
and disk space than other methods of recording video on PCs. At a
manufacturer's suggested list price of $699, the Intel Smart Video
Recorder includes an easy-to-install PC add-in board and nearly $800
worth of business presentation software along with video clip art on a
compact disc (CD). "The Intel Smart Video Recorder is simple to use," said
Claude Leglise, Intel's video brand marketing director. "Plus, it comes
complete with software and support so users can add video to their
business presentations quickly and easily." One-Step Capture and
Compression Using the Intel i750r video processor, the Intel Smart Video
Recorder digitizes, compresses and stores Indeo video files on the PC's
hard disk in a single step. With other technologies, users must capture
and compress video files in two steps--first capturing the video and
storing
it on hard disk, then compressing the file in a second step.

According to Leglise, single-step capture and compression offers users
significant advantages. First, because video files are compressed before
they are stored on the hard disk, less hard disk space is required (about
nine megabytes [MB] needed for one minute of video versus about 35-50 MB
required with two-step boards). Second, one-step capture and compression
offers dramatic time savings because no additional time is required for
data compression. Compare this to a two-step process which can take 15-30
minutes to compress one minute of video. Finally, with the one-step
process, very few video frames are lost during capture, regardless of
host PC CPU speed or system configuration. The Intel Smart Video Recorder
captures 30 frames per second (fps) in a 160 x 120 pixel window or 15 fps
in a 320 x 240 window, irrespective of the CPU power. Because two-step
boards do not have an on-board video processor, the host system may become
overloaded, causing the video clip to lose frames. "Two-step boards that
claim to capture 30 frames per second may in reality deliver far fewer
frames per second on less powerful hardware configurations," Leglise went
on to say. Scalability During playback, Indeo video's "scalable" technology
automatically determines what hardware is available and optimizes
playback quality for that configuration. This ensures that during
playback, more powerful PCs will be able to tap into this stored video
data, delivering progressively faster frame rates without dropping frames.
Lost frames from video clips captured with two-step boards can never be
recovered, no matter how powerful the system. Therefore, as users move to
faster systems, video recorded on the Intel Smart Video Recorder will
"upgrade" to the newer machine. Bundled Software, The Intel Smart Video
Recorder is packaged with $784 (manufacturer's suggested list price)
worth of free software including Microsoft's Video for Windows*,
Asymetrix's Compel* and MediaBlitz!*, and GateKeeper* Visual Thinking
Vol. #1 from Firstlight, Inc. Video for Windows uses Indeo video
technology to provide video playback on any Intel386tm or Intel486tm based
PC without additional hardware. Compel, released from Asymetrix earlier
this month, is a multimedia presentation package for Microsoft Windows,
designed for on-screen PC presentations. MediaBlitz! is Asymetrix's
program for organizing and integrating animation, graphics, audio, and
video into multimedia shows. GateKeeper Visual Thinking is a multimedia
CD-ROM containing "click and change" presentation templates and over 200
video scenes with audio and other multimedia resources, enabling the user
to create multimedia presentations in minutes.
