Dear TESL-Lers,
I know there was a discussion about student's names recently, but it occurred
to me to ask if anyone may know of a website or other resource which contains
a list of phonetic approximations of common names from various countries,
particularly those of Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and China. I can't always
"hear" the correct pronunciation even after asking a student several times. I
don't want to embarrass them or myself by asking too many times, and I
certainly don't want to spend a semester butchering their names either. I
realize English does not contain many of the sounds of other languages, but
some kind of reference would be helpful.
Thank you,
