I would just like to add another artist to the list of easily understood
songs in English. Dinah Washington is great to use in the classroom
because she is not only easily understood (every now and then there is a
word that you can't make out though, but not a big deal), her songs are
often quite amusing.
One that comes to mind is "Long John," a song about Dinah being in love with
her dentist. Includes great lines like, "You thrill me when you drill me .
. . and I need you very much," and "I hope it keeps on aching, so I can see
you everyday." Great stuff. I personally find her better than the
Carpenters, but mainly because I have more of a tolerance for her. Same
genre as Etta James, Billie Holiday, etc. Her music is also relatively easy
to find (in the US anyway . . . . ).
