Dear colleagues:

I am a teacher at the University of El Salvador. I work with Spanish
speaker students who are at an advanced English level and are also
studying to become teachers. I am teaching a grammar course. Now we are
studying coordination- specifically conjunctive adverbs.

We are using the book "Communicate What You Mean." In the book, it is
said that the conjunctive adverbs: however and nevertheless are
interchangable. However, I found an exercise in the same book in which
they are asked to use one or the other. This is the exercise:
I had planned to visit Mexico;________________, my car is too old.

My question is: Is there any difference in meaning and in use between
these two conjunctive adverbs? If so, what is it? and how can I explain
this difference to my students?

I am looking forward to getting an answer, so that I can get rid of my
doubt and also give a satisfactory explanation to my students.
