Materials for unique themes

Re books for an animal rights theme; if I remember correctly (I haven't
read this since I was a kid), Black Beauty may deal at least partially
with that subject (mistreatment of a horse). Also, two by Richard Adams,
The Plague Dogs (two dogs who escape a research lab) and to a lesser
extent Watership Down (rabbits losing their home to development). There
are probably more kids' books, depending on the level.
