I suggest that dictation be used for PRACTICING various things, rather
than TESTING. Even though there may be no research to back up its
value in the communicative classroom, it is another type of activity to
vary the classroom routine and reinforce whatever point is being worked on
at the moment.

The archived file that Anthea mentioned, DICTATE FILE, contains a discription
of a self-correcting type of dictation that I've found valuable for instant
feedback. There's nothing more boring for the teacher than correcting a
pile of dictations!
