1990 was the year in which the contest was held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. Communism fell in Europe, and many of the songs reflected the wider political context. It was Italy's Toto Cutugno who won the contest however, his song Insieme: 1992 which was about a united Europe.

The 1993 Eurovision Song Contest was held in Millstreet, a small town in south west Ireland. The early 1990s were a time of massive change in Europe. These changes were reflected in the Eurovision Song Contest as newly sovereign nations took to the stage. Three countries made their respective debuts; Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia.

With trendsetting styles, choreographed dance moves and heartbreaking smiles, boy bands have been a dominate force in pop culture for decades. The Jackson 5, Menudo, Boyz II Men, The Beatles, and New Kids On The Block are just some of the boy bands that have ruled music charts over the last 60 years. But one of the most notable times for boy bands was the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Somewhat the Jodeci of the 2000s, the South Florida R&B group of Pretty Ricky made their presence known with the two hit ablums of Bluestars and Late Night Special. Led by Pleasure P, these four members developed an identity separate from other artists of their era with an unique swag that quickly gained the attention of R&B fans.

Through the past 30 years, the way music is made and distributed has varied dramatically. The rise of the internet from the late 1990s has played a crucial role in how music is consumed globally, setting up a butterfly effect that inadvertently affects how musicians and artists are compensated and paid.

As the early 2000s set in, the power dynamics started to shift. Mobile phones became more popular, and music streaming sites started to mean business. Consumers now had access that physical record stores no longer defined. The supply pool got bigger, putting the listener in charge of what was hot or not, but the relationship was still tilted. From my perspective, the musician was still away from the pulse, and interactions with fans were primarily happening at meet-and-greets and tour venues.

It was through this that acoustic rock songs found their way into the mainstream, with new bands and artists combining alternative and soft rock to create a new and exciting sound. In fact, countless acoustic rock songs became synonymous with 90s teenagers, as they used poetic lyrics and welcoming melodies to discuss themes of identity, adolescence, emotion, and rebellion.

These songs soon became anthems for the next generation, which also resulted in new musical explorations and allowed new subcultures to emerge. With this audiences saw the rise of performers such as Alice in Chains and Nirvana.

Think about it: People were willing to spend money on part of a song when FULL SONGS existed for less. And in some cases, people (me) already owned the full songs and even full ALBUMS, but still chose to pay more money for a song clip. That's madness. And it worked, because by 2002, Tiger Electronics had reportedly sold more than 20 million HitClips devices, bringing in $80 million. And that doesn't include sales through 2004.

Foolish or not, these toys were an important step in music history that helped prep the world for the iPod's release in 2001. For many people, HitClips served as a first experience with a handheld, deconstructed mix tape. Unlike Walkmans and CD players, HitClips let you switch between songs and artists with ease. There was no skipping through tracks you didn't like -- you simply selected the song you wanted from your collection of clips.

This horror drama series, created by David Lynch back in 1990, follows the murder investigation of homecoming queen Laura Palmer in the fictional town of Twin Peaks. Although the show was canceled due to declining ratings after two seasons, it established a cult following that led to a 2017 revival on Showtime. Many original cast members, including Kyle MacLachlan, reprised their roles almost three decades later. You'll only have access to the first two original seasons on these streaming platforms, but why not see what all the fuss is about?
