Who decides? What are the guidelines? Differences?

I feel blessed after reading some of the stories for the past two =
months.

My husband was riding his bicycle on Dec 7, 1998 and was struck by a =
car. Naturally he had on no helmet. He was lucky enough to have been =
hit in front of a hospital and the ambulance was instantly there, but it =
was necessary to copter him to the (very) nearby trauma hospital.

He had multiple skull fractures and massive brain swelling. He was in a =
coma for eleven days, during which time I sat vigil watching the =
pressure (ICP) monitor. As he began to awaken I found out that he had =
an exploded L1 vertebrae, which, after double surgery was replaced, and =
has miraculously since, healed. Joe seemed to have regained a =
tremendous amount of his memory back right away. He was able to read, =
count and recall most everyone's name after about two weeks. I remember =
the day I walked in and the nurse said to him, 'who is that' and he =
said, 'that's my wife, Susan' ...I still get choked up thinking about =
it. I had not told him that. Even during the coma, I just said my =
name.

Well anyway, now he is in FINR (Florida Institute for Neurological =
Rehabilitation) a wonderful place devoted to BI only and behavioral =
modification, social skills, vocational rehabilitation, PT, OT, ST. Joe =
is the bell of the ball. Everyone loves him and he loves everyone (and =
so he tells me every day). His memory is better now than it was before =
the accident! His attitude toward life and spirituality is wonderful =
and uplifting. He is a total pleasure to be around and brings a laugh =
and a smile to everyone, and I mean everyone, he sees. He has become a =
social butterfly. He is still working on issues of certain types of =
problem solving and conceptualizing things.

My questions are ...

* could we be so lucky as to have this new and improved Joe
(not really new and improved, but found himself again), or should I be =
waiting for the other shoe to drop

* he was dx as TBI at first, at what point could he become mild, I have =
not been updated with that info

* is there a point that a TBI can recover enough to become 'normal'?

Well I am sure I could think of some more, but lets start with these. =20
I would like to say that Joe and I are not religious people, but the =
power of prayer has 200 percent worked for us ... I would encourage it=20

Thank for your time in reading my story ... and for any feedback I can =
get ...Susan

Hi Susan,
Sorry I cannot answer your questions. I am too new at
this also but I would like to comment on how very
blessed you and your husband are. I am so very happy
for both of you! Can you please tell me where the
Florida Institute for Neurological Rehab is? Thanks!
Pam, mother of Tracy

Guys,
To my way =
of thinking (if I can crudely borrow from Shakespeare<spell>) It is
TBI or not TBI that is the question.
