Hi Kim,
I agree whole heartedly that a person will never be
the same again! I was TBI in 1985 and didn'y even know
there was such a thing as TBI. I was definately not the
same and even though I learned to cope through the
years, now that I am getting older, the symptoms are
getting progressivly worse. My daughter Tracy was just
injured in March 1998 and I can assure you she is not
at all the same person she was the day before her
accident. Determination may play a big part in getting
well but I feel that no amount of determination can
heal that brain injury and that is what causes so much
frustration. The brain is so complex that no 2 people
who have an injury, even if the injury happened the
same way and injured the same part of the brain, will
have the exact same outcome. I know many many
determined tbi survivors who are still suffering
tremendously.
You have been blessed with a good recovery and I hope
yours will continue.
God Bless,
Pam, mother of Tracy

Well, in my case, they are telling me that my determination to get well may
be slowing me down...that I'm pushing too hard.
Also...there is some indication that some people have a gentic predisposition
to having more problems after a head injury.
No question, every injury is different so every recovery is different, even
if some of the symptoms are the same

I don't think people with TBI are ever the exact same way they were before
the incident that caused the TBI. I was in a severe car accident and even
though it is subtle, many people have told me that my personality is
different. Plus, I only have slight difficulties with memory and word

Dear Susan,
This whole question of rating TBI sort of doesn't make sense to me....I have
heard of people who were in comas for long periods who recovered essentially
most of there former functioning and then there are people like me who just
got a "little bumb on the head" and after two years are still having lots of
problems from it...although i have never peraonally met these supposed
totally recovered people...my theory is that they have a blessed memory loss
of who they used to be so they can more easily accept their "new
self"...where as people with "mild" tbi still have a full awareness of just
what they have lost so the emotional adjustment is somewhat harder to deal
with.

As for your husband...it sounds to me like there will definately be some
peramant changes in him...and remember change is not always bad as it seems
in his case...but from what i understand most people with TBI are never
EXACTLY like their "oldselves" there will be many areas where things are just
different...as far as your ? about "getting back to normal?' I'd like to
hear the definition of "normal" as i don't think i've ever met anyone in that
catagory tbi or non-tbi included ;-)....

my best to both you and your husband as you follow the yellow brick road
through tbi OZ!!! Laura K.
