Hi Everybody at AFRICA-L:
The 42 professors who were fired by the government are the ones who requested
the government to set up an enquiry commission for the 17 slain students.
The professors demanded that the body of the slain students be returned to
their family for proper burial. They also requested the government to remove
the security officers who killed the students from the university's campus.
After 3 months, the government hasn't returned the bodies yet and maintains a
huge armed presence at the campus. It has also targeted both faculty and
students for persecution because of their protest of the killings.
In short the government is the killer and the professors protested. As a
result, they were fired from their jobs.

Greetings to everyone at AFRICA-L:
The Addis Ababa University once more takes a brunt of the government's wrath.
Last Friday, April 9, 1993, the Ethiopian government dismissed 42 senior
professors and lectures from the university.
The university which was closed after a bloody massacre in early this year
when 17 young students were slaughterd was reopened only two weeks ago.
Among the fired professors are all the full professors of the medical school,
two top surgeons of the nation, the top brass of the law school and the creme
of the faculty of technology.
Most of the professors had protested the killing of the 17 students and had
requested the government to form an enquiry into the killings.
The dismissal was effective from last Friday and the remaining faculty of the
university, both tenured and untenured, were told to re-apply for their jobs
for a 2-year contract. This is perhaps the only place in the whole globe where
tenured professors and associate professors are reduced to signing a 2-year
contract.
